I Want to Play this Version of Final Fantasy XIII

final fantasy xiii 16 bit

Square Enix has published a retrospective trailer to help get fans caught up with the current events within Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Instead of doing a boring old video with footage from the previous games, they did it in 16-bit style, like from Final Fantasy VI.

You can view the retrospective below:

Despite this new coat of paint via “de-making” the game, it still doesn’t solve the issues fans have been describing with the series, namely the throwaway plot, the lack of features from previous games within the franchise, and the forgettable characters.

Still, look at those beautiful pixels! Oh Square, why do you play with my heart?

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII is coming to Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on February 11th.

Sweet Amano! why does this not exist? Especially the music.

See, I tried to play FF13. Really I did. First problem was the story was extremely silly…which is saying a lot since Square had made some SILLY stories.

Secondly, the combat. It isn’t hyperbole when I say it was the worst RPG combat I have *ever* seen. No doubt about it.

FF13 really killed any lingering respect I had for Square. They could remake FF7 like everyone wants them to do but I don’t even want them to touch it. They’d probably turn it into a FF13 clone.

Thank god for NIS, Atlus and Bandai Namco, because they seem to be the only folks getting it right IMHO.

I wanted to like FF13 but indeed the story is much more silly then usual and I just couldn’t get into the characters as much, Sazh was the only interesting one in the bunch that I could care for. I really couldn’t get into it though. I however, have decently high hopes for XV. From the tech demo it seems to get the mood and style of FF8 with a hint of Kingdom hearts active battles. My fancies have been tickled.

I hope with the utmost respect that Square Enix gets their act together on the RPG department. A lot of their Eidos titles are rock solid titles like Deus Ex and Tomb raider but Square has been all over the place compared to their snes-ps1 dominance. Bravely Default looks like a good jump to basics. I’m pretty pumped for that title too.

Ditto on Bravely Default. I spent 20 hours on the demo. Cleared every boss multiple times and simply could not get enough. I’m worried about what the full game will do to my life.
