How PayPal Has Reinvented the Gaming Market

PayPal

Despite this article’s title, we are not here to say that PayPal has drastically reinvented the gaming market. It hasn’t—well, at least not from a broad perspective. However, it has improved game payment systems, which has benefited a wide range of game publishers, developers, and, in some cases, the websites that host their games.

We’ll take a semi-deep dive into how PayPal has reinvented the gaming market from a payment perspective.

What is PayPal?

We’re aware that many people reading this page are probably aware of what PayPal is. It is one of the most recognisable payment brands in the world. But, if you’re not, you only need to know that PayPal is an e-wallet. This (basically) means that PayPal is a way to manage your payments online. If a game or platform accepts PayPal (and many do now), you can easily send payments to and from your credit/debit cards and bank accounts.

However, PayPal wasn’t the first company to do this. It was one of the first to simplify the process and allow the average person to receive cash online. More on that soon, though.

PayPal Has Made It Easier to Make Payments

Perhaps the main way PayPal has reinvented the gaming market is by making payments through the system simple. When we were writing this post, we went to the PayPal PR website, which has numerous ‘releases’ stating that game developers have benefited immensely from PayPal integration.

PayPal stores a person’s payment information, such as debit/credit cards, bank details, and funds received from elsewhere. If people want to make payments using their PayPal account, they don’t need to whip out their debit/credit card each time and tap in a number. They log in to their PayPal account and send the cash. A process that used to take minutes now takes mere seconds.

Game developers have found that integrating PayPal can help them make a lot more money on microtransactions, etc. You’ll probably notice that many platforms now accept PayPal as a payment method because not only does everybody trust it, but PayPal also makes it ridiculously simple to make payments.

PayPal Has Made It Easier to Receive Payments

While most games don’t send cash to their players, some do. Take, for example, the online casinos at CasinoMeister that accept PayPal payments. If you play at an online casino, there is always the hope that you’ll win. If you win, you want it to be easy to withdraw money to your account. Nothing is easier than working with PayPal on this. PayPal is all about making the process simple. Cash can be deposited into a PayPal account within minutes of withdrawal and sent straight to bank accounts with minimal fuss. There is no other online payment method that is so simple and fast.

This doesn’t just apply to casino games, either. We are starting to see a rise in niche games where players can, per the rules of the game, trade items for real cash with other players. PayPal has facilitated this, and it has completely shaken up the way that some games work. Although, if we’re completely honest, we’re not a massive fan of the niche games that rely on this concept. Still, if you enjoy it, feel free to do so.

Beyond this, some games have started allowing their players to sell unique content to other players (think Roblox), and PayPal has made it easier for content creators to receive payments.

PayPal Has Made It Easier for Developers to Seamlessly Integrate Payments

While many game developers and publishers benefit from the payment systems on the platforms they publish on, not every game is published on these platforms. This is especially true of the more niche games that are more likely to be downloaded from a website somewhere than found on the PlayStation or Xbox.

These games still need to make money. Thankfully, PayPal is available. PayPal can easily be integrated into games, and it provides plenty of documentation on this. We don’t think there is a more straightforward payment platform to integrate into games, particularly one as trustworthy as PayPal.

So, PayPal is making it even easier for more niche games to make money on microtransactions, etc. This means that games that may not have otherwise been developed (or made any money) can make some cash. We have seen a slight uptick in more unique games, which is nice to see. Sure, many of these games will be appearing on other platforms anyway, but it is still nice to see that PayPal has made it easier for some developers to make cash.

PayPal is Secure

Of course, PayPal is a secure system. This hasn’t helped to reinvent the gaming market, as such. It just means that game publishers can offer a payment method that is reasonably trustworthy in their games, which might make it a little bit easier for them to make money. It also means that these companies don’t need to go through the rigmarole of developing a secure payment system (which is incredibly hard) since somebody else will do it for them.

The Future of PayPal in the Gaming Market

The long and the short of it is that PayPal is not reinventing the gaming market on a broader level, but it has helped games grow by offering a better payment solution. PayPal has made it easier for niche game developers to make money. It has made it easier for players to withdraw money they have made in games (particularly when selling mods, etc.). All in all, PayPal is a great boon for the gaming industry, even if it does not completely change the games we have on offer.
