Hover: Revolt of Gamers Drops Subtitle Because of Similarity to #GamerGate

Whether you were for it or against it, we still find that over three years later, some people are still trying to beat the dead horse that is #GamerGate.

What began as an accusation of a lack of ethical standards and later became a consumer revolt made a clear divide in the industry for a time. A game was released earlier this year that had a curious name for the entirety of its development – Hover: Revolt of Gamers, the game likened to a spiritual successor for Jet Set Radio.

The subtitle was clearly very similar to the hashtag, a similarity apparently too strong for the developer to handle now (thanks, Alex R).

The game’s 1.5 update added a bunch of additions, changes, and more – buried within the update was a note that the game’s subtitle was dropped “because of the similarities with a group of crazy people on the internet.”

Who knows why it took them this long to decide to drop the game’s subtitle after years of development, crowdfunding under the original name, and even finally launching as such.

Renowned Japanese composer Hideki Naganuma (who also worked on the Jet Set Radio franchise) is totally confused why they dropped the subtitle, too (he did a few songs for the game and helped promote it).

If you’re looking to check out the now-named Hover, you can find it over here on Steam. The game also has both a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox One version on track for sometime later this year.
