House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn Announced for Japanese Arcades

Sega has announced House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn for Japanese arcades.

While previous games in the series tend to come off as B-horror experiences that are silly at best, Sega is promising a “never experienced before” type horror experience for this game, with a theater-like arcade cabinet as seen with some of the previous games – while also using the latest tech.

The game is built within Unreal Engine 4, and there will be more enemies on screen than ever before. Fans can also expect the cabinet to have things like vibrating seats and air-blowing fans, which turn on pending the scenario. There’s also a motion sensor to entice players that might pass by.

The game will have an initial location test from January 19th to the 21st at the Sega Akihabara Building 3 in Tokyo, Japan. Here’s a look at the cabinet, which comes in two color variants:

Here are the first screenshots:

For now, you can visit the game’s official website here, and make sure to follow the newly launched official House of the Dead series Twitter account here.

FYI it’s only a matter of time before this gets location tests in the USA and eventually cabs in bigger arcades. I’ll keep tabs on the local scene here because I expect some of the bigger arcades in NJ to get one.

Hmm, wonder if they mean VR by “never before experienced.”

What i’m wondering about more than the actual game itself is what tech they’re using for the guns. The good old House of the Dead 1 and 2 used the classic, but modernly obsolete, “light gun” tech.

I’ve played some newer japanese pistol arcade games, and they operated on tech more closely resembling a Wiimote. It was functional, but not exactly satisfying compared to House of the Dead 2. The added tracking in the newer games slow things down because you’re not aiming your gun at the screen, you’re using the gun as a more laggy mouse. There are enthusiast “light guns” that you can buy that work on modern screens via a set of sensors that supposedly resembles the older light guns much more than the newer Wiimote-esque ones, and I hope that’s the tech they’re using for this.

Sod the arcade games I want a PS4 VR House of the Dead game. Love the first two games and would also like to see a HD remaster of them too.

Seems like they’re taking in some World War Z approach, with fast moving zombies piling up on each other.

Do they have any unused Tarot cards for bosses?
