Horizon: Zero Dawn Goes Gold

Guerrilla Games has announced that Horizon: Zero Dawn has gone gold.

This means the development on the game has been completed, and it’s being readied for shipment and its final release. The news came from Guerrilla Games studio boss Hermen Hulst, who posted a photo of the Dutch team.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is launching for PlayStation 4 on February 28th.

Looks pretty interesting. Not often you see a developer take such a shift in focus and direction, let’s hope their gamble gets us a good game.

It’s going to be bad. Some footage came out and what we learned is its essentially a bad scifi clone of Monster Hunter with Assassins Creed Mechanics and graphic glitches thrown in.

Those dynamic dinosaur fights where you had to uses stealth, ingenuity, and cleverness to outsmart the AI? Gone and replaced by standard MMO esk path finding, health bars, little melee combat, etc.

Dialog is awful. The writing is rather weak, but passable. The voice actors absolutely kill it and not in a hammy way like Resident Evil where you can actually enjoy it for its cheesiness, but more in a holy crap these VAs are bad.

I was really really looking forward to this game, and after seeing the footage I might get it from a bargain bin in a year or two. Sony was quick to have the original video taken down, this is just a mirror.

I don’t know about that comparison. Despite it’s shortcomings The Order managed to deliver a visually stunning experience. Albeit short and with some issues, but it never the less had a merit to its design that could click.

Horizon seems to lack that. Aesthetically it’s passable, which given how stunning it looked in the early trailers is nearly sinful. The game play looks like a bad monster hunter clone. If you play these kinds of games, which there are several it doesn’t really appear appealing. Dialog is simply bad, and the story doesn’t appear as if it will be anything other than passable.

Releasing to mass disappointment like The Order, yes it will probably achieve that standing. None of the flaws with the game appear to be things you can fix with only a month left of development in a day one patch. Even Neogaf was laughing hysterically at the poor levels of quality, so even reviewers might not give it a pass for virtue signalling reasons.

In an interview Guerella did mention that they addressed some performance issues and given that the game’s just gone gold it’s believable.

From the video I saw something I never thought it was possible. VAs worse than Burch.

The only thing that worries me is how much virtue signalling there will be in the game.

Let’s be honest here – the Order 1886 got tons of hate from jealous PC owners and Xbox owners. That hate was intense before the game even released, which shows it had less to do with the quality of the game (which was excellent), and more to do with fanboy down syndrome. Another good example is Ryse, which Sony and PC fanboys slammed mercilessly, but once it came to PC, it garnered a “Very Positive” rating. The common denominator is that PC gamers in particular really can be a bunch of petty, jealous, immature fucks when it comes to big games they don’t get to play day one. I love gaming on PC but PC fanboys have become the most annoying in the hobby.

So The Order was actually a great game and everyone saying it was bad was just PC fanboys and Xboneres? How can you be this deluded?

Shut up you filthy PC vermin, I learned on NeoGAF that The Order was denied its rightful place as the second best game for the Bloodborne machine, all because those PC peasants saw the revolutionary scripted setpieces and knew they would never be able to experience such silky smooth cinematic 30fps storytelling and world-building, so in a fit of autistic rage they decided to ruin the game’s reputation by badmouthing it on Korean motion fresco forums.

While I don’t at all disagree with it obviously not being a particularly good game, it’s kinda dishonest to act like this is a surprise: this is after all still a game by Guerilla, and with a trackrecord like theirs there wasn’t any reason to expect anything great to begin with.

I watched a 30 mins video and it looks like a third person Far Cry TBH. It’s nothing like Monster Hunter.

I’ve generally enjoyed their games except for Killzone 3’s ending and Shadowfall. Their games have been flawed, but never outright bad like this. In my opinion anyway.

Agreed, but I call it fanaticism which is an excellent word since it includes the word “Fan” in it. I disagree on the premise behind Ryse though. When it released on the Xbox One it had some problems. It was tied to the Kinect, it was repetitive, and it had frame rate issues. Aside from the repetitiveness (which lets be honest is overlook able) these issues were addressed in the the PC release.

I’ve not seen anyone who generally thought the game looked bad on the Xbox One start singing it’s praises on the PC. There were also people who wanted The Order 1886 to come to the PC as well.

I agree on the premise that the Order was hated because it was a perfect opportunity to knock Sony down a peg and that’s all people cared about. Arguably the game isn’t exceptional, but it’s enjoyable and set up an exciting potential open world sequel.

Fanatics in any community are obnoxious. Try having a discussion about Fallout 4’s short comings when they’re around. Especially on Reddit where they like to cluster. They never really grasp that outside the Fallout community, 4 isn’t considered that great.

Yep, that tweet confirmed the virtue signally that explains why the game is absolutely garbage. Yeah they could fix some of the performance issues but that doesn’t change the general gameplay, quest structure, dialog, or the other flaws. I agree with others, the only good thing about this game is going to be the salt party that’s going to occur.

I still chose to remain somewhat optimistic. This could be Burch doing what she does – being terrible.

I’d be more optimistic if I didn’t watch some potentially leaked gameplay footage. Terrible she most certainly is, arguably the worse voice actress I’ve ever heard.

Dialog, gameplay, mechanics all follow suit. Here’s a link if you want to judge for yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjqUG6BbIpQ&t=306s Original got taken down, by Sony and the original uploader after even Neogaf was mocking it for how bad it was.

I did see this video. There is no defending Burch or the dialogue, but the gameplay could still be good.

It’s a bit strange that it got leaked before the game had gone gold. The only possible person who could’ve leaked it is a journalist and we all know how good they are at games. Imagine if that Polygon video of Doom got leaked before we saw any other footage of the game. We could be looking at a similar situation.

There are a couple of gameplay videos on the official PlayStation channel of the devs playing the game and it doesn’t look too bad. In fairness they would show the best parts of their game, so possibly the truth may lie somewhere in between.

I’ve heard from people who have watched 2 hours and they report it get’s worse gameplay wise. That’s just their opinion I’ll admit, but this is enough that I’m cancelling my preorder and not touching the game.

I agree they would be playing the best parts, but what disturbs me is those healthbars shouldn’t be in the game. This was never advertised as a monster hunter, Tokuden or pick your entry in that genre, style game. It was billed as an action survival game, so that right there is enough of a red flag to guess the developers are likely not showing honest footage of the game.

Worse I’ve heard from other people who have watched more footage claim the game does not get better. To many red flags at this point, I’m going to have to pass. Plenty of other games to get this month to waste money on a game that is going to be mediocre at best at this point.

I’m just waiting for the Xbots and PC elitists to eat Sony Fanboys alive when this game comes out. You know it’s going to happen. Anything less than a stellar game guaranteed it by how much they advertised this as the most have game. Worse they closed the other Guerilla studio instead of having them work on a Killzone game. Horrible mismanagement.

Doom was okay for a game, but dying in the tutorial is just pathetic. Those journalists really hate being in the video game industry.

Being cautious is a good strategy and if you have your eyes set on other games you may as buy those instead. I myself don’t have too many other game to look forward to in March so I’ll be getting it.

I don’t trust hearsay, especially before the game has gotten gold. I’m not sure if the footage was leaked via a journo or was a previous demo build.

I don’t like console wars – they are just toxic and bring nothing to the conversation. I just hope that the game is good.
