Heroes of the Storm is effectively dead, will no longer get new content updates

Heroes of the Storm

Blizzard Entertainment has announced Heroes of the Storm will no longer be receiving major content updates, effectively killing off the game.

It will only be considered a part of the “maintenance” stage for them, like with games such as Starcraft and Starcraft II. A lot has happened since Heroes of the Storm first debuted 7 years ago in 2015 as a more casual MOBA to compete against the likes of League of Legends and DOTA 2.

Despite it’s initial popularity, Blizzard would later stop supporting the eSports side of things for the game. They also moved staff to other projects after slowly winding down its active development.

Seasonal rolls and hero rotation will continue on for the game. The game shop will also remain open for players to purchase whatever they may wish from the game. However, there will be no more new items added to the list moving forward.

This is not the first MOBA to have lost support in recent years. Heroes of Newerth had also ended making major content updates in the last few years. Last month, that game had officially ended its services for good as well.

With mainline support ending for Heroes of the Storm, this marks the essential end of yet another MOBA, where very few still stand today. This is a far cry from just half a decade ago, when the MOBA market was considered over saturated.
