Heretic movie traps Christians in first trailer with a creepy villain by Hugh Grant

A24 has shared the first trailer for Heretic, the latest horror film to come out of the boutique production studio and the creators behind the 2018 film A Quiet Place.

The new Heretic film, which stars Hugh Grant in his latest villain role, gets visited by two young female Mormon missionaries (played by Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher) who he promptly traps and then forces them to endure various psychological games and torture.

“I won’t keep you if you wish to leave, but I want you to choose which door to go through based on your faith,” Grant says in the trailer, followed by him writing “BELIEF” and “DISBELIEF” on two doors. “Do not be afraid,” Grant’s character says in the trailer. “You will witness a miracle.”

The trailer doesn’t get bloody, however, a miniature labyrinth Grant’s character has crafted seemingly grows to life-size, potentially trapping one of the girls forever. There’s also an eerie shot with one of the girls seemingly getting confronted by some kind of creature.

Though he got superstar success as a British heartthrob, Hugh Grant has been playing the role of a villain in recent films like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, The Gentlemen, and even Paddington 2.

This will be Grant’s first role in a true horror film since he starred in the 1988 comedy horror The Lair of the White Worm, based on the Bram Stoker novel of the same name.

Heretic is co-written and directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who as mentioned got their breakout success with John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place. Production on the film began last fall in Vancouver during the SAG-AFTRA strike, however a guild-approved agreement let the production continue.

The cast for Heretic includes the aforementioned Grant, East, and Thatcher, who are joined by Elle McKinnon, River Codack, Carolyn Adair, Stephanie Lavigne and Elle Young. Producers on the film include: Katie Aquino, Scott Beck, Liliane Bedford, Julia Glausi, Kai Raka, Stacey Sher, and Jeanette Volturno.
