The Legend of Legacy is a new 3DS RPG headed by a fantastic team, including some key players from SaGa among others.
Featured above, the first trailer for the game was unveiled and it features … quite a lot of English subtitles, in fact. Could this be indicative of FuRyu looking to localize the game as soon as possible? Moving on, we have quite a lot of information to go through for the game, courtesy of Famitsu:
The game takes place on the mysterious island of Avalon, which is said to have been the heritage of the gods. The story unfolds organically, with the player able to travel and explore completely unhindered by the story, moving freely about the island.
The map is available from the beginning and will play a key role in the exploration of the island. Every time the player discovers a new map, it will unlock a number of new areas for them to explore. And using this sequence of events, you’ll be able to unlock the secrets of the island.
There are seven possible main characters that can head the player’s party. At the beginning of the game, the player will select one character as the main character to lead the group, and fill out the remaining spots in the party from the remaining characters.
And it is indeed possible to exchange characters in and out of your party as you play; just return to ‘Initium City’, and you’re free to re-select your party members. It hasn’t been explicitly said whether or not you can change the main character you’ve selected however.
Playable characters include 3 males, 3 females, and a…weird frog prince.
So, we have Meurs, a 27 year old Elementalist.
Liber, an 18 year old Treasure-Hunter.
Owen, a 36 year old Bounty Hunter.
The girls consist of…
…Bianca – unknown age, and she has amnesia.
…Garnet, a 20 year old Knight.
…Eloise, a 24 year old Alchemist.
Finally, there’s Filmia, the frog prince. His age is unknown.
Kyoji Koizumi, the game’s designer, has said that he wanted to make a game where there are no quests to guide the player. Instead, this time around, the player will be given a single objective – explore the island – and it’s up to the player on how they want to do it.
There are a number of oddities to the game’s story, such as magic only being usable on the island, and it is mysteries like that, or who lived in the ruins covering much of the island, that they want the player to discover for themselves.
The whole experience will be different from your general RPG, and it seems like it will be a fun experience.
The Legend of Legacy is hitting Japanese 3DS handhelds on January 22nd.
