Hellgate: London returns as Hellgate: Redemption, new AAA game for PC and consoles

Hellgate: London

Newer studio Lunacy Games, led by Hellgate: London creator Bill Roper, has announced a new licensing agreement to produce a new game in the Hellgate franchise for PC and consoles.

The new licensing agreement will let HanbitSoft create a new “new AAA PC/Console game” set in the Hellgate franchise, currently codenamed Hellgate: Redemption.

While details are scant, Hellgate: Redemption will be set in an unconfirmed part of the franchise’s alternate history, post-apocalyptic demonic world. Further details weren’t announced.

Originally released back in 2007, Hellgate: London was one of the original looter shooters and was set in a unique demon-infested post-apocalyptic world. I played the game at launch and enjoyed it despite early issues – and I still own my game DVDs.

“I’ve dreamed of returning to the franchise we created back in 2007 for many, many years,” said Bill Roper, CEO and co-founder of Lunacy Games. “I’ve always felt I had unfinished business with the Hellgate IP, which is why our codename for the project is Hellgate: Redemption.”

Roper continued, “By using Unreal Engine 5, cloud-based game servers, as many off-the-shelf solutions as possible, and great co-development partnerships, we’re putting every development dollar toward gameplay and innovation,” explains Roper. “We’re keeping core gameplay and lore elements of Hellgate: London in our current design, but our intent is to build an exciting new experience that takes advantage of the numerous advances the industry has seen over the past 17 years since the original game launched.”
