Now that Ninja Theory’s new action-thriller game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, is out – critiques are coming out for the game.
One striking takeaway is how the game handle the player failing too many times, a longstanding mechanic that some game developers focus on too much – or too little.
Without going too much into spoiler-territory, the game features a protagonist that is cursed. Each time you die, Senua becomes more cursed, and should you die enough times, the curse will reach her head (and brain), killing her, effectively ending your journey. The game will then delete your save file.
This isn’t the first time a game has done this.
Steel Battalion was infamous for its massive controller – as well as the requirement that you hit its “eject” button prior to your mech going up in flames, otherwise your save file is deleted. Other games would mess with your head by making you think your save data is deleted.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice is now available for PC and PlayStation 4.
