Half-Life Alyx launches on March 23, according to a post made today on the official Valve Twitter account.

This clarifies the broader announcement window Valve had given previously, with the company simply promising a March release. The Steam page for the game has the following to say about it:

Half-Life: Alyx is Valve’s VR return to the Half-Life series. It’s the story of an impossible fight against a vicious alien race known as the Combine, set between the events of Half-Life and Half-Life 2.

Playing as Alyx Vance, you are humanity’s only chance for survival. The Combine’s control of the planet since the Black Mesa incident has only strengthened as they corral the remaining population in cities. Among them are some of Earth’s greatest scientists: you and your father, Dr. Eli Vance.

As founders of a fledgling resistance, you’ve continued your clandestine scientific activity—performing critical research, and building invaluable tools for the few humans brave enough to defy the Combine.

Every day, you learn more about your enemy, and every day you work toward finding a weakness.

Unlike previous entries in the series, Half-Life: Alyx is a VR-exclusive experience, so those without expensive headsets will have to sit this one out. This is upsetting for some long-time fans, especially considering how few people own these devices overall.

The good news is that all the previous Half-Life games are still free to play on steam for a little over a month. They will remain so until the release of Alyx, which thankfully now has a definitive release date.

Half-Life Alyx launches on March 23 exclusively on Steam. The game will support Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
