Guillermo del Toro: Silent Hills is “Not Gonna Happen” [UPDATE]

silent hills 04-26-15-1

Actor Norman Reedus, whose likeness was featured prominently in the playable teaser for Silent Hills, has spoken out regarding the game’s status.

“Super bummed about this was really looking forward to it. Hopefully it’ll come back around. Sorry everyone,” said Reedus on his personal Twitter.

While his statement didn’t say the game was cancelled, his tweet linked to a Walking Dead fansite that reported on the game being supposedly cancelled.

We’ve learned that Silent Hills may not be cancelled after all, rather that Guillermo del Toro’s statement was in regards to his collaboration with Hideo Kojima on the game.

A source (via IGN) has said that if fans want an update on the status of Silent Hills, they would “have to go after Konami for those answers.” They also reiterated that del Toro was only talking about his working alongside Kojima on the game.

This also doesn’t clear up the question of whether or not Kojima is still working on the game – considering the rumors swirling his employment at Konami once Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has shipped.

It seems like there’s more trouble brewing at Konami, if the words of Silent Hills co-director Guillermo del Toro are to believe.

The news comes from a talk with the famed director speaking at this year’s San Francisco Film Festival (via reporter Matt Hackney). After being asked for the status of Silent Hills, del Toro responded:

“It’s not gonna happen and that breaks my greasy heart”

While his response comes off as somewhat tongue-in-cheek, it raises concerns after the troubling developments at Konami and Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima. If you haven’t been following Silent Hills, the game is co-directed by Kojima as well.

Finally, it’s also worth mentioning that Konami announced they would be removing the playable teaser for Silent Hills from the Playstation 4 store, on April 29th. Is Konami quietly shutting down the PS4-exclusive Silent Hills?

File this as a rumor for now but – we’ll keep you guys posted.

If you already have it registered to your account will you still be able to redownload PT? If so I think you can register it on the PSN website without owning a PS4 right?

Never seemed to me like Silent Hills was ever meant to be exclusive beyond the teaser.

This cancellation and the speculation leading up to it has been rather amusing, though.

If true, that’s very sad. PT is one of the best examples of horror in a world full of Pewdiebait jumpscare games. What the hell is going on at Konami?

Seems like Konami is trying to emulate Capcom in so far as that their only goal now seems to be to piss off longstanding fans.

No matter your feelings about Kojima, without him Konami is doomed to mediocrity~.

“A source (via IGN) has said that if fans want an update on the status of Silent Hills, they would “have to go after Konami for those answers.””

Interesting quote, because that’s exactly what fans of Busou Shinki, Konami’s original toyline that they’ve more or less killed off like this several years back, were told when asking Masaki Apsy, one of the people responsible for that project, as to the status of the toyline.

I’m suspecting everyone involved in either project was put under NDA by Konami to avoid a media backlash, and Silent Hills is dead and we will never get a proper answer as to why from them.

There’s also rumors that Konami is pulling out of video gaming entirely as their profit margins are being held up perfectly fine by health spas, arcade parlors, and other things.

Out of all the video game companies I know, Konami has the longest list of IPs that aren’t being used. This is par for the course for them.

Whoever’s running that company is a bag of dicks, essentially.

I just wish they’d fucking sell the IPs so that these great properties aren’t rotting away in the dirt.

You’d hope this would happen soon, but similar companies like Capcom refuse to die. They’ll probably end up as a Free 2 Play Android Publisher in about 10 years.

I wish those publishers could go under and more competent companies buy our their IPs, alas, we’ll have to endure Schizophrenic Evil 7 soon and never get Megaman.

Still, I don’t much care for IPs, just good games, so it doesn’t matter much, just give us good NEW but similar IPs form other publishers.

The biggest bummer IMO is that we won’t get another Silent Hill soundtrack; especially if Yamaoka was doing it or was a part of it. It’s very hard to find good Silent Hill kind of music; bands like Ulver and Fennesz/Sakamoto that have similar feels are rarities.

Well, this was just about the last thing I was hyped for. With the morality police raising arms because Xenoblade Chronicles X has a bikini in it, Konami self destructing, and Valve blindsiding everyone with this mod thing, I can only say this: games crash is not an if, but a when.

Just as well, I guess. Kojima would’ve made the game into a social statement for his ego.
But at least it’d be fun

Wow, this is just frustrating. The most exciting thing about this game was that Del Toro was working on it, and if he dropped out, then I’m really damn bummed out. Here’s hoping there’s more to this than what we’re seeing right now.

Hahahahah you knew it was coming. After the Kojima disgrace you knew
he was bailing on this game. Del Toro saw things falling apart at
Konami and wisely got out too.

Konami, go bankrupt, you deserve it.

Konami is worse than Capcom. They have a long laundry list of bullshit. Remember that Silent Hill HD collection? They really tried to screw Guy Cihi out of royalties. I can’t remember all the details, but it was bad business. Capcom has at least been trying to get their shit together with games like Strider, REHD, and RE:R2.

Konami, please go out of business so people can buy up all your IPs so that they may be saved and brought into future gens for posterity.

Apparently Konami said they were still going to work on the Silent Hill series, but the Silent Hills project is dead. Hopefully they’ll use what was there to make something that isn’t complete fuck in the future…?
