The gaming industry has lost yet another talented individual, Greg Martin, a prolific artist and designer has passed away. He is responsible for some of the most iconic and outstanding box art in the history of video games.
Some of the most notable of his works are: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3, Adventure Island, Landstalker, Pac Man, Sonic Spinball, Taz Mania, and so on. He was an animator at Hanna-Barbera, where he honed his craft and worked on series like The Jetsons and The Flintstones, only to later work on other classic series like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Thundercats.
His work on video game box art was done in the days before photoshop, so to all of you youngsters out there, he had to do everything by hand. He would airbrush these gigantic 24 by 30 paintings that would take at least a week to be completed. He was known for his extraordinary work ethic, putting in the work of five days into three days, frequently pulling all nighters to get his pieces finished.
His work in both animation and video game box art is the stuff from my childhood, and I’m sure his work has touched many of you, dear readers, as well. You can view a thorough list of the box art he has done over on Nintendo Age, where Greg also received a proper remembrance write up. RIP Greg, your work is an inspiration for all of us.
