Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser is getting mocked by online netizens for old comments where he boasted Grand Theft Auto VI wouldn’t release under a Donald Trump presidency.
The original comments from Houser revealed the now-former Rockstar boss was “thankful” the long-awaited sequel wouldn’t launch while Trump is President of the United States.
“It’s really unclear what we would even do with it, let alone how upset people would get with whatever we did,” Houser said in a 2018 interview for Red Dead Redemption 2 launching.
“Both intense liberal progression and intense conservatism are both very militant, and very angry,” Houser said. “It is scary but it’s also strange, and yet both of them seem occasionally to veer towards the absurd.”
He added, “It’s hard to satirize for those reasons. Some of the stuff you see is straightforwardly beyond satire. It would be out of date within two minutes, everything is changing so fast.”
These comments from Houser are getting him dragged online now, though, because Donald Trump was just elected to be the 47th President of the United States, and will take the oath of office on January 20th, 2025.
You know what is also scheduled for 2025? The release of Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to launch sometime in fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
After noticing this users on Twitter/X and Facebook promptly began to joke about the genuine comedic effect of the game finally getting a release window and Trump being re-elected as President.
Some users even went so far as to suggest Trump being re-elected will inevitably force Grand Theft Auto VI to get delayed again. To avoid releasing under Trump, however, it would need to be delayed until 2029, when the next President is sworn into office.
It’s also worth mentioning Dan Houser left Rockstar Games back in 2020 and launched his own company, Absurd Ventures.
Absurd Ventures’ first projects are two “original storytelling universes” with both American Caper and A Better Paradise. Both of those projects are not video games, they’ll release initially as a graphic novel and an audio fiction series, respectively.
