If you’ve read my European CRPG article, you probably know the love I have for Piranha Byte’s Gothic series. Especially the second game, which in this staffer’s opinion is the best work of art ever crafted by man. That being said, it hasn’t aged very well. Firstly, the game is prone to crashing even on the most rock solid of systems. Secondly, you cannot run the Steam overlay with it due to the game using a particularly old version of Direct X. And thirdly? Other than a fan-made texture replacement, no real modding of the game’s visuals has been attempted.

Imagine my surprise when RPG Watch posted a video of one of their staffers running through a DirectX11 mod for Gothic 2 Gold. Though the mod is still very early in development, it exists as proof that this masterpiece will finally get the modern features and fixes that its sequel, Gothic 3, has already benefited from.
If you want to try the mod out for yourself, you can do so via this forum user’s post.
