Golden Boy anime finally getting western Blu-ray release

Golden Boy anime

After numerous teases and fan-demand over the years, Discotek Media announced they’re finally bringing legendary Golden Boy anime to Blu-Ray in the USA.

The new Blu-Ray will include all six episodes of the legendary anime based on Tatsuya Egawa’s manga of the same name, remastered. This is the first time the series is being remastered on Blu-ray outside of Japan, though a release window wasn’t announced.

The all-new release will include commentary from original Kintaro Oe (the protagonist) English voice actor Doug Smith, who also does graphic design for Discotek, including this release (just like he did at ADV Films).

Originally released in 1995, the six-episode original video animation (OVA) adapted the series’ first manga, which ran from 1992 through 1997 in weekly Super Jump.

The sex comedy follows the titular golden boy himself, Kintaro Oe, a 25-year old “freeter” (Japanese term for unemployed, underemployed, or otherwise not full-time worker) and university drop-out who roams Japan working various odd-jobs. He encounters several women that dramatically change his life, and comedy ensues.

Golden Boy is a personal favorite of mine and a must-see for any self-ascribing otaku – it’s one of those rare gems where you’re begging to get more, though it somehow feels complete in only six episodes. You also have to watch Golden Boy with the English dub – it’s as legendary as the anime itself!
