PlayStation have announced that Ghost of Tsushima has become the fastest-selling first-party original IP PlayStation 4 title; with 2.4 million units sold globally in the first three days of launch.
While the prior record holder was not mentioned, GamesIndustry.biz theories that it may have been Horizon: Zero Dawn, which sold 2.6 million units worldwide after being on sale for three weeks.
However, GamesIndustry.biz points out the game has yet to topple established first party PlayStation 4 titles over a similar period of time. These include God of War (2018) with 3.1 million copies, Spider-Man with 3.3 million copies, Final Fantasy VII Remake with 3.5 million units, and The Last of Us Part 2 with 4 million units.
In addition, Famitsu reports that Ghost of Tsushima sold an estimated 212,915 copies during its first week on sale in Japan (thanks @Nibellion!). The news hardly comes as a surprise, considering PlayStation Japan announced this week that the game was selling out in some Japanese stores. They also announced they were increasing production to compensate.
As an aside, The Last of Us Part 2 reportedly sold 178,696 units in its first week in Japan. However, sales the physical version of the game reportedly dropped by 85% in its second week.
Even so, factors that should be considered include the coronavirus pandemic hindering physical sales, and that The Last of Us Part 2 would be competing in Japan with a game based on Japanese culture.
