We’ve gotten a look (via AnimeNewsNetwork) at the new Lupin the Third anime series, which is set for a full premiere next month in Italy.

The new series features the iconic thief, Arsène Lupin III, as well as the rest of the cast from the 1984 original including Fujiko Mine, Daisuke Jigen, Goemon Ishikawa XIII, and even Inspector Zenigata! The new series is based in the Italian setting of San Marino. Featured above, you can view the series’ debut trailer – it’s filled with familiar characters and new locales.

While TMS Entertainment is handling the new series, the original creator of the 1967 Lupin the Third manga, Monkey Punch, said that he’s excited for the start of a new animated series, and that he’s looking forward to Lupin’s new adventures. The new series was originally announced back in October of last year, at the MIPCOM event in Cannes, France.

So who is behind the new season? Series veteran Kazuhide Tomonaga (who served as key animator on Lupin the Third: The Mystery of Mamo and Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro) is the chief director, followed by Yuichiro Yano (known for Moyashimon, Francesca, Mujin Wakusei Survive) sitting in the director’s chair over at Telecom Animation Film. The script is being penned by Yuuya Takahashi (Lupin the Third: Daisuke Jigen’s Gravestone). Finally, the longtime series’ composer Yuji Ohno is returning once again to compose the season’s music.

Tomonaga pointed out that when his generation watched Lupin III 40 years ago, it was completely different from the anime that was created for children. He reminisced by saying it had a massive impact on the hardcore adult fanbase. Tomonaga is hoping to live up to fans’ expectations by creating a multi-faceted Lupin, namely one that can be hard-boiled and still goofy, and sometimes cool.

While the world premiere for the new Lupin the Third season is going to air on Italy’s RTI channel, next month, the full broadcast is set for Japanese television this fall.
