GBA throwback SRPG Dream Tactics shares gameplay trailer

Dream Tactics Gameplay Trailer Thumbnail

Spectra Entertainment have shared a new gameplay trailer for their SRPG title, Dream Tactics. The game is a throwback to the style of GBA games such as where the classic Fire Emblem franchise made their debut outside of Japan.

Spectra Entertainment is helmed by former members of AAA studios such as Isaac Leon (Relic Entertainment) and Zach Chen (Electronic Arts). They formed an indie developer as a mean to “pursue their dreams”, hence the theme of Dream Tactics.

Here’s a rundown of the game, plus the gameplay trailer:

Dream Tactics

Ready your decks, pick your party, and prepare for battle! Innovating on the tactical RPG genre, Dream Tactics delivers strategic card combos and rich character customization.

The Pillows have taken over the Dream World! It is up to our unlikely hero, Neru, and her friends to defeat the Pillow Legions and save the Dream World from its inevitable collapse.

HISTORY

At the beginning of 2021, the three of us started developing Dream Tactics as a modern throwback to old-school GBA tactical RPGs. Quitting our jobs in AAA, we founded Spectra Entertainment as our opportunity to add to this genre and to make the games we love.

We really enjoy the intense and gripping combat of the Fire Emblem series, as well as the character customization in titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics. While newer titles in the genre have started emphasizing simulation and romance mechanics, we wanted to bring the genre back to its roots but take it in a more gameplay-focused direction. Dream Tactics aims to deliver on an experience that keeps every turn fresh and exciting, as well as let players hone, refine, and customize their party to their liking. At Spectra Entertainment, we love games that offer a rich amount of customization and we believe that this is one of the main appeals in a tactical RPG.

FEATURES

  • Over 100 Cards to Choose From! Cards are key to combat in Dream Tactics. Each character can play multiple cards a turn allowing you to perform devastating combos.

  • New Turns Mean New Opportunities! Each turn, every character draws a completely new hand of cards to play. This provides you with a fresh selection of resources to utilize every turn.

  • Prefer Different Cards? Spend points to redraw cards and create the perfect hand!

  • Pillows Galore! During your adventure in the Dream World, expect to find all sorts of fluffy foes. But do not let their cuddly appearance fool you! These pillows are ready for battle and sure to make the sharpest tactician think twice.

  • Use The Terrain to Your Advantage! The landscape of the Dream World offers plenty of ways for you to outmaneuver your opponent. Beware that your foes may outmaneuver you in kind!

  • Build Your Decks! Find cards along your journey and use them to build decks for each one of your characters.

  • Trade Cards Between Characters! Fine tune each character’s play style to suit your tactics. Any character can use any card!

  • Equip as Much as You Can Afford! Characters will be able to equip more items as they level up. However, you must strategically balance your inventory as the more powerful an item is, the more cost it will be to equip it.

  • Find Others to Join Your Cause! Along your journey, you will find a variety of allies who will accompany you on your quest.

  • With Allies Come Options! Each ally you find brings a unique array of cards for you to weave into your strategy. Choose up to 4 party members to bring into battle which suit your tactics best.

  • Venture Off The Grid! Forged by dreams themselves, the islands of the Dream World offer treasures for those willing to search. But also keep a look out for the dangers that may get in your way.

  • Meticulously Crafted With Love! Enjoy the beautifully surreal landscape of the Dream World. Inspired by the classics of the GBA era, Dream Tactics is our tribute to the greats that came before us.

Dream Tactics is expected to launch later in 2023 for PC (via Steam).
