Hololive English talent Gawr Gura announced that she’ll be “graduating” from the company and cease activities with the character.
For those unfamiliar, VTubers call refer to quitting, retiring, or moving onto something else as a “graduation”. This tradition is a holdover from the intersection of VTubing and Japanese idol culture.
Gura announced her graduation in a recent stream titled: “important announcement”. Over the course of the day, fans had already been anticipating what the announcement would be, with many already expecting Gura’s departure. You can check out the stream yourself below.
Since hololive branched out to the English-speaking world, Gawr Gura quickly became an exceptional performer with millions of subscribers and eclipsing Japanese talents who had been with the company for longer. At the time of writing, Gura has approximately 4.5 million subs, the second highest is Houshou Marine with approximately 3.9 million.
Despite an erratic streaming schedule, Gura has maintained her position as hololive’s crown jewel and has represented the company in large collaborations and performed at Dodger’s Stadium.
Gura’s graduation comes as multiple other hololive English talents are also leaving. Just within the past year we’ve lost Amelia Watson, Ceres Fauna, and Nanashi Mumei.
Gura cited disagreements with management and the direction of the company as reasons for her departure. Guar will formally cease all activities on May 1, 2025.
For those who will miss Gura, we highly recommend you check out Senzawa in case she makes an auspiciously timed return.
