Heading into 2025, it appears that the major gaming consoles have reached passed their all-time sales peak, according to new sales figures.
As December 2024, game console hardware sales saw a decline in hardware sales (via Circana), with spending over that period being 29% lower than the previous year.
The new sales numbers are to be expected now given how long the consoles have been on the market at this point. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series have been available since 2020, and the Nintendo Switch has been on the market for nearly 8 years.
Total hardware sales for the year came to $4.9 billion, which is still higher than 2019’s figure of $3.9 billion, the final full year for Sony’s and Microsoft’s consoles offerings.
Recently, Sony released a refresh to their PS5 lineup with the introduction of the PlayStation 5 Pro, which is more powerful than the base model, but also comes with an expensive $699 price tag. Meanwhile, Nintendo just announced the Switch 2.
Overall, this information appears to be an expected result for the console industry and new releases, and a possible Xbox Series refresh will likely see hardware sales increase for upcoming years.
