Gaikai Might Launch Q3 2014

It’s a known fact that Sony spent quite a big chunk of money to wholly acquire the game streaming platform Gaikai. The question is: when would we start seeing their technology be integrated into the Playstation Network, or across non-Playstation devices?

Sources close to Eurogamer have claimed that the streaming service could be hitting the Americas as early as quarter 3 2014. One key factor to Sony’s Gaikai acquisition was that it brought promise of backwards compatibility streaming to the Playstation 4, as it currently has no way of playing PS3 games.

Sony’s Andrew House had some very bold words to say regarding the Gaikai tech:

“But what’s important is to understand the full scope of what we’re trying to achieve and why we felt the Gaikai acquisition was important. Our goal is to be able to have a new form of game distribution streamed from the server side, initially to PS4 consoles then gradually moving that out to Vita,” House said. “But eventually, the endgame is to have this available on a multitude of network-connected devices, essentially delivering a console-quality gaming experience on devices which are not innately capable of doing that.”

So when can the rest of the world expect the Gaikai tech to roll out? Both Sony and Andrew House seem tight lipped regarding that info. “I really can’t be specific on the European roll-out,” House says. Sources close to Eurogamer have said that after the Q3 2013 launch in the Americas, SCEI will follow in turn later that year, with Europe the following year.
