G/O Media’s editorial director Paul Maidment has quit the company, days after staff quit Deadspin en masse.
Earlier this week we reported how the entire editorial staff of sporting news website Deadspin had quit. The decision was spurrned on after Deadspin deputy editor Barry Petchesky had been fired. His firing was due to him pinning non-sports stories to the top of Deadspin’s homepage, in protest of a memo from Maidment for the website and its staff to focus on sports stories.
Maidment announced he quit in an internal email that was obtained by Vice and some former employees of Deadspin.
“I wanted to let you all know that effective immediately I have resigned my position as Editorial Director of G/O Media. It is the right moment for me to leave to pursue an entrepreneurial opportunity. I admire the journalism that you produce and the unique voice that is otherwise missing from mainstream media. It has been a great honor and I wish you all the very best. I am certain that the sites will grow and thrive in the future.
All the very best,
Paul Maidment”
What do you think? Has Maidment been “encouraged” to quit after the disastrous fallout of Deadspin? Either way, was he to blame for what happened?
