FUNimation Distances Itself from Writers Shoehorning Politics into English Dub for Prison School

prison school 10-02-15-1

We’re very much-so against censorship here at Niche Gamer, however, we’re also not ok with localization teams adding random things not present in the source material.

Last week, the latest episode of the Prison School anime was aired on FUNimation, the western publisher who licensed the anime.

Prison School takes place in the Hachimitsu Academy, one of the most stringent all-girls academies in Tokyo, who just now began allowing boys to attend. It’s quite hilarious, raunchy, and definitely not safe for work.

Within the latest episode, the following line is said:

“Woah, cut the breaks Arthur Fonzarelli. You got a stick up your ass, or are you one of those dumbass GamerGate creepshows?”

Now compare this line to the original Japanese, translated directly into English:

“You keep talking to me like we’re on equal terms, but I’m a 2nd year. You have to address a superior more politely. Shut… up…”

To be clear, the line was thought up by FUNimation writer Tyson Rinehart, who sarcastically remarked on the negative reaction the line was getting on social media:

“If you think rape threats against women in gaming are acceptable, I’m glad my script pissed you off. #PrisonSchool #itwasjustonelineyounerds”

So what is the reasoning behind this line being randomly shoehorned into Prison School? Rinehart said the following when responding to an inquiring fan:

“I threw it in because I thought it was appropriate to the scene and fit the flaps. I even found it funny, but not my best.”

You can view a recording of the particular line put into the anime, below:

He continued to rail off on fans of the show who complained, despite the majority of the fans pointing towards the direct translation, saying it makes no sense to add in such random lines. While the #GamerGate bit is completely random, the Arthur Fonzarelli joke is lame, and extremely outdated, in my opinion.

To be clear, there’s a fine line between “localization” and “translation,” which many people seem to forget. Regardless, adding a completely unrelated line to the script is disrespectful to the creators of the show.

We promptly contacted FUNimation for a response both on social media and privately, and their only response was an email pointing to this blog post, in which the publisher distances themselves from the writers and actors involved with the English dub:

Last week’s Broadcast Dub episode of Prison School generated significant feedback from anime fans. While the company is not able to answer each person individually, FUNimation does read and review all fan feedback, without exception.

In creating English dubs over the past 20+ years, FUNimation has always modified each Japanese script to appeal to Western audiences. This ensures that North American audiences can enjoy a high-quality viewing experience regardless of their familiarity with Japanese culture.

Neither the dialogue in our shows nor the personal statements of our actors or writers reflects the views or opinions of FUNimation. Official statements from FUNimation are only released via company owned channels (i.e., website and social media profiles) or newswire.

FUNimation will continue to pay close attention to fan feedback on Prison School and will take it into consideration in the future. FUNimation is committed to providing the highest quality entertainment possible.

It’s essentially a cop-out response, with FUNimation taking no responsibility for their consistently awful localizations for various anime shows.

So what does this mean? Nothing really – save the fact that enough of you guys raised a valid point: localization should be as close to the source material as possible, while making intelligent choices to adapt things for westerners.

You’re better off just watching the original Japanese with English subtitles, because it seems like writers looking to make a name for themselves won’t be held responsible by publishers.

Despite this, the entire thing is still not as black and white as many would like it to be – it’s a very subjective thing. What are your thoughts on the entire debacle? Sound off in the comments below!

thing is, I’m fairly certain that in the contracts for some of the dubs, Funimation gets some creative license. Just look at Shin-Chan(Which is Hilarious).

The feedback still forced them to make this blog post, which is a weak PR deflection, but that is expected. Perhaps Mr. Rinehart will receive a slap on the wrist for including his politics in such an unprofessional way.

It is obvious that the writer is a typical SJW with a totalitarian mindset, who uses his position to spread propaganda.

There’s a very fine line between a translation and a localization and it’s one that almost nobody seems to be able to walk. Everyone is either leaving honorifics in and just not translating half the words in any given sentence or randomly changing entire lines and giving them entirely different contexts.

I don’t usually have a preference either way between subs or dubs but things like this make me side firmly against the dub here. If I can’t trust that line to be accurate why should I trust any line?

Pretty sure if someone is watching Prison School, they aren’t gonna give a shit about your political quips. Why the writer thought it was funny, or even appropriate, is beyond me.

I mean, GG isn’t even that much of a thing in Japan, is it? So it already doesn’t make sense in the context of the show’s location. Secondly, people who watch a lot of anime understand the whole “you respect your superiors without question” ideal, so the original line made perfect sense.

Fucking translators taking it upon themselves to decide what we should hear.

I’m more concerned with them following the original script as closely as they can, but that shot at GamerGate was not only unnecessary, but I can see the dub line flying over the heads of those who don’t know what GamerGate is.

I’m not satisfied with Funimation’s response at all. This isn’t the first time they’ve deviated off the script with their anime. I found their work on Shin-chan and Detective Conan to be abysmal, especially with Shin-chan. They just turned the entire show into some sort of pop culture referencing joke.

I guess I’m not buying any DVDs with Funimation’s logo plastered on the case.

I get localization (though I think things like taking out honorifics and other well known Japanese cultural things for western audiences is stupid and kind of insulting, since it’s basically telling us we’re too “western” or “white” to understand other cultures) but this is just the writer inserting his own personal opinion into an anime. It would be no different than if I was translating the same line and said “You got a stick up your ass, or are you one of those retarded SJW’s?” (also, the idea that GG, the people fighting *against* censorship is the side with a stick up their ass just shows how much he doesn’t understand GG or the broader culture war at all) Neither one is acceptable, because it’s turning the character into a mouthpiece for a writer who didn’t actually create the character, the setting, or anything. Not to mention it’s a needless politicization of a show that looks to be nothing more than stupid fun.

tl;dr fuck this guy, and start boycotting any show he’s involved in translating. Maybe then companies will start paying attention to what their writers do to the shows they localize.

Orgiinal comment: “Funimation is stupid if they take no action. Redub the line, it was a line that needed no localization and shows contempt for you audience”

All politics aside, it should be obvious that shoving in a current and niche event in there is very stupid.
Even among anime viewers a part of them don’t know/care about the affair. And if people a year from now want to watch it, they probably won’t get it either.

This just shows how little the translator care about his job and the source material. Either that or he’s completely incompetent. Either way this guy needs to be fired.

Only things that need localization are pretty cultural specific things, like translation bancho as gang leader of gang boss. Same thing with accents and/or stereotypes that a culture uses to represent foreigners or people from certain regions (Osakan characters having an accent).
Plus yeah referencing individuals should be changed if the audience doesn’t know them. Inside out had a weird localization example where they changed the game the dad was watching in his mind depending on the region.

When this broke on twitter, I made a minor rant about why just ‘referencing’ something isn’t funny, using SeltzerBurg movies as my example. I’ll summarize the gist of my rant here; I’m not annoyed at the mention of gamergate in this light…I’m annoyed because it was a lazy joke that was proud of itself. It’s bad comedy, and GG being a topical matter does not excuse bad comedy.
(an example of poking fun at GG that I actually thought was funny was PopArena’s jab in his Eliminst chronicles review, for the record)

That said, there was a right way and a wrong way to react to this sort of criticism…tyson chose the wrong/Bioware way to do it by antagonizing his own critics. You don’t put in shit like “it was one line you nerds” and expect people to just nod.

As for Funimation’s response, there’s not much else to say besides “corporate letter”. I doubt anything will really come of this….but I do ponder how the reaction would be if the Tumblr crowd raised such a stink?

It’s not really even that. It wasn’t in the original script. The fun part? I think the average weeaboo buying this is much more likely to be well acquainted with japanese culture than with Gamergate. Also, if GG fizzles out, anyone buying this in the future is stuck with a reference to something they most likely never heard about.

This is why I think its such a bad idea to insert epic meems or pop culture references in general (unless the latter was already used in the original) in localizations. This isn’t even about whether you support GG or not, this is people working on the english dub that decided to remove a line so that they could insert a line which is not only completely different and unrelated to the original line, but is shoehorning their personal political view into the show.

Like, imagine if Card Captor Sakura in the english dub suddenly went on a rant about Bill Clinton getting a blowjob.
That’s so far out of left field for the show and would never fly, as well as being completely pointless to bring up in.

It still baffles me how or why these sorts of people get jobs where they not only dislike their audience, but are willing to go out of their way to take pot shots at the people they know will be very willing to not just call them out on it but do something further, be it level a complaint or initiate a boycott.

Something like Prison School isn’t exactly one of the more mainstream of series’ either. All this has done is take what was a niche audience and riled and alienated them. The least Funimation could have done was flat out apologise to at least try and restore faith, but they seem pretty happy to wave it off and cut an already small audience down further.

Bold plan — I’ll give them that — let’s see how it pays off.

Are all dubs from a bygone era. A time where a company didn’t shove dubs out the door to try and match the timing of the show airing in Japan. They’re choosing to skimp on quality to push quantity.

There are dubs for shows I wouldn’t have even watched subbed because they were so awful, shows that people generally agreed were the worst of the season.

Hell Vic Mignogta has been rather dickish when it comes to gays and lesbians, but it’s his opinion and if he was injecting his politics into his voice role it would also be an issue. I’m fine with modifying scripts. Japanese doesn’t always translate well into english. And there’s phrases, colloquialisms, cultural jokes, and other assorted things that won’t make much sense in english. You also have to take into account that you want the dialogue to feel
natural for english speakers. You get a better quality dub that way.
I’ve listened to dubs that opted for a more…literal translation, and I
just can’t listen to it. I’m fine with modifications so long as the original intent, personality of the characters, and overall story and tone of the show are preserved.

I don’t see any attempt at preserving anything in the original script. All I see is just shoehorning in a bad joke.

Really, I’m more upset at just that than the actual content of the joke. I don’t really care if someone makes a jab at gamergate. But it’s just not appropriate to the scene or from the looks of it, even the character.

I find Funimation in general often just tries too hard to make the writing “cool” to appeal to kids and teens. Just kook how they put in completely unnecessary expletives.

  93. Hey
    October 2, 2015 at 9:02 pm

I don’t know if 2008 is “old” but it certainly doesn’t feel recent. 7 years is a significant amount of time. Things are just different now. Different doesn’t always mean bad but there’s a very clearly marked decline in quality and its been there for at least a few years now.

Like I said above, I don’t mind it because I don’t pay attention to the dubbing industry outside of when its outright shitting up things I like (i.e. the fact that Atlus USA REFUSES to use either dual audio despite the fact that less well-off localization companies do it all the time).

One of the reasons I’m not an anime dub person is because too often, dub writers would insert stuff into the scene that had zero relation to the original script. It gets worse though when the subtitles don’t match what was actually said in the Japanese. But these writers and adapters think they need to make their mark on things and screw anyone who wants something faithful to the original script.

  97. AstroNerdBoy
    October 2, 2015 at 9:14 pm

Topical humor is always the worst due to its very limited shelf life.

“This just shows how little the translator care about his job and the

It wasn’t the translator. It was the dub script writer. There’s a difference.

Had the characters been talking about journalism, ethics or even if he had been defensible after something then I could have seen the reference being potent.

I would feel bad telling people to rip off content creators if they enjoy that content. But these people aren’t content creators. They take content that already exists, and put it through a grinder. They’re butchers. And their meat is rancid.

If Funimation doesn’t want to discipline its employees, just don’t buy it. Get it for free. Contribute to the fan community that translates anime and manga for free so that an english speaking audience can enjoy it. These are people who do what they do purely for the love of the medium. It was an attempt to make the show more appealing to boys, and though I can’t recommend that localization over the japanese original, at least it doesn’t have a random scene with the group breaking the fourth wall to talk about what current real world events offend their mouthpieces.

There wasn’t even an insult in the original line to begin with, basically just telling someone to be quite and mind their place. Gamergate had no place in that, not as an insult, or anything else. An adaptation would be changing “2nd year” to “upperclassmen”.

Not defending this at all, but at least this is just one line compared to a whole scene, character, or even game’s worth of dialogue – the fact that people watched the dub long enough to the point this even came up puts it ahead of some games.

As a massive anime buyer, collector, and someone who prefers dubs
every time Funimation should know better in this case. There was nothing
to gain in this case and by reading many comments the opposite of a
gain was achieved. There have been many fantastic dubs released by
Funimation in my opinion and they didn’t need to resort to adding in
western specific “Events” or “Politics” or however you’d describe them.

Likethe article states there is a difference between localization and translation, I’m one who is not very fond of 100% direct Japanese translated into English because many times it comes off as awkward,
however even when you compare the original line to the one shown in the video it is clear that it’s not a translation but a complete change of
    the script.

With all that said I wonder what Funimation will do, and if any changes will come when the bluray sets release. Others have mentioned that they will be boycotting the release if its left as is but I love Funimation too much and its dubs to just outright boycott them but this is something that they can’t be doing in the future so I sincerely hope they take all this feedback and actually put it to good use and don’t let specific writers and such have free reign on imputing their own agendas.

While I’m not watching the English dub of Prison School, nor do I have any stake in Gamergate, I think this situation is fucking stupid just for how cringe and needless it is.

For one, the line itself is REALLY out of place for a lot of reasons. Yes, Anzu’s original line has nothing to do with what was said in the English dub, and that line is going to date the show. And it’s not like that particular dialogue needed to be punched up. But on top of that, GG is very much a Western thing, so shoehorning that into a show that’s obviously set in Japan regardless of localization makes even less sense. You can see that Anzu herself is a gamer, but why would she give a shit about video game politics that emerged from the US?

Also, this isn’t exactly the type of property where such a line would fit in any case. Prison School is as gleefully disconnected from reality as much as possible, and that’s a big part of why I think it’s so fun. There’s little in the way of morals or politics here, and I doubt fans want to see either being inserted. People can watch something else if they want that.

By token, the people that this line would appeal to sure as fuck wouldn’t be watching Prison School, period. Have you seen the amount of tits and ass on this show? And BEFORE Episode 7? You could picture people trying to fit in the words “problematic”, “toxic”, and “gross” as many times as possible into angry blog posts. The clash with the intention of this line and PS’s overall tone is hilarious.

Then you’ve got Tyson doubling down on Twitter, endorsing his line while bringing up “rape threats” in response and later insulting people that watch the show. His response to the response makes the inclusion of the line look that much more selfish, short-sighted, and petty.

So watching Prison School getting dragged into Gamergate stuff when it had nothing to do with it otherwise, thanks to a writer wanting to be THAT GUY by shit stirring, doesn’t sit right with me. Not really surprised by Funimation’s “hands off” response, either. They probably just gave him a stern talking to and a slap on the wrist. I’m sure Funi would rather everyone forget that it ever happened, but the damage is already done. What a waste of time.

When it comes down to it, this isnt about FUNimation (passive aggressively) bashing GG or adding in an outdated fictional character from a 70’s sitcom. This is just another example of why dubs in anime and the people who work on the dubs get a bad rap within the anime fandom. If even FUNimation can’t be bothered to own up and put in the effort into preserving the stories the original Japanese creators intended, why bother paying for the shows these dubbing companies bring in when we can just get the fansubs for free. At least then the fansubs are mostly more accurate than the likes of FUNimation care to put in.

  170. Bedarb
    October 3, 2015 at 3:53 am

Obviously, personal opinions, preferences, & politics have no place in a dub. As small as this is, this particular example looks like misappropriation of someone else’s IP for unprofessional, personal exploitation. Imagine what Nintendo would do if some v-neck wearing, starbucks sipping beta with an English major and an axe to grind fucked with their brands. That kid would be chased out of the industry in a heartbeat.

With regards to localization in general, the best example I can think of offhand is Working Designs’ stuff in the ’90s. They inserted cheesy jokes and Western pop culture references which maybe added some flavor/personality to the original scripts but it also pissed plenty of people off, at least in hindsight. I think if you have a mediocre script to work with you can either play it safe or be blamed if you take liberties with it. If you decide to alter the source material even in a small fashion, you should never self-insert your personal drama, including social media drama. I can deal with quirky humor, if it’s good, but direct references to stupid crap in the media is too much for me or any sane adult to tolerate.

Im in agreement with Audie. I don’t think he should be fired cause he said something that was directly insulting to something I believe in, I think he should be fired because he couldn’t keep his personal politics out of his job and actively harmed the product as a result. Even if slightly, the show is now worse off because of him and if I were Funimation, I’d be concerned what else will be affected by him.

You are blatantly misrepresenting the point here. No one thinks it should be banned. However, many people now refuse to support the product because 1. It said something we found insulting and 2. The writer seems unable to keep his personal politics out of his work which caused him to betray the meaning of the line, date the show, and make it a lesser product as a result. It also brings about the concern about where else is he shoe-horning in poorly written political jabs because he isn’t professional enough to do what he should be.

After posting my reply in this thread and going back and reading the replies of others many of them confuse me. This article states that the English dub version of the anime has had the line altered to this reference however maybe of the people voicing their complaints (They have every right to as it is a stupid change) state that they dislike dubs, watch fansubs etc… all of which is fine but if they never had any intention of watching the dub with or without this needless change why is this an issue for the people who don’t like dubs?

I went and did a quick check on the Funi website and looked at the sub version of the episode and the quote used in this article

“You keep talking to me like we’re on equal terms, but I’m a 2nd year. You have to address a superior more politely. Shut… up…”

Is the exact same line that is subbed in the official funimation broadcast of the show and the DVD/Bluray release will, as well, include the official sub and Japanese audio track along with the dub.

So that brings me back to my original question, if you can easily watch the official subbed version and never have to deal with this part being altered why are many bringing up fansubs, learning Japanese among other things? Just honestly curious because it seems like many don’t know that the official subs have no mention of it whatsoever. (And no I’m not defending funimation in this case because even as someone who prefers dubs this change is stupid)

While true, it wouldn’t have hurt them to at least either dubbed or subbed the show in it’s original script. If I remember correctly, there used to be this show called Super Milk-chan. There were two separate dubs: one that was tongue-in-cheek Americanized, the other was the original script followed as close as it could to the original Japanese script.

  183. Meittimies
    October 3, 2015 at 6:10 am

localization should follow the context of the original plot. If the point is to make a joke in the scene but you cant translate the joke to western audiences, then you figure out a similar western joke on top of it.

This case was essentially the translator completely abandoning the original context of the line to insert his own abortive politics to it. Thats not only sloppy work, but disrespectful for the creators of the original dialogue. That is usually something you see on early 2000-era amateur subtitles, which says a lot about the quality of work of the localizer of Prison School.

It wouldn’t be challenging to think of an alternative too.

  189. British_Otaku
    October 3, 2015 at 6:41 am

I assume that their subtitles for their official release will contain the original line and even think there is some chance that the broadcast dub may be redone (I don’t believe any of them are final products), but I don’t want to support flawed products if I have a good reason to.

If there is the possibility of avoiding the bad stuff, see DLC for a game, that’s cool but there is less of an option with DVD/Bluray.

I haven’t read many comments buy learning Japanese or supporting fandubs is sort of like a precaution against what FUNimation may do I suppose, both of them meaning you aren’t supporting them.

  190. evilmajikman
    October 3, 2015 at 6:43 am

I actually personally prefer dubs. I don’t speak Japanese, so I can’t really criticize the acting or lack there of. Plus, I feel like if I’m going to read… I’d rather just read the manga. I really don’t see the point of reading and watching at the same time when I could just get a manga. I was really interested in Prison School… I haven’t been keeping up on my anime, but Prison School was definitely on my radar. I had already purchased merchandise off of amiami. This killed my hype. and I would be PISSED if I was Michiko Yokote (the script-writer of the source anime). This doesn’t just disrespect consumers, it disrespects the original script-writer. And the abuse of power disrespects the higher authority. Frankly, Tyson has no respect for anybody that is responsible for the creation of his job.

There is a difference between a joke dub like Duel Masters which are basically going all out to make a new Canon much like an abridged series and changing only a few lines making the overall package worse.

Being less faithful might have been better but people don’t welcome that sort of thing sort of outtakes since they usually pay money got an English take on the original content.

  193. Bianca Ann Saracino
    Bianca Ann Saracino
    October 3, 2015 at 6:51 am

Oh I definitely understand not wanting to support it on the fundamentals that such a change shouldn’t happen, I was just commenting how it seems many people where saying that they dont care for dubs along with their dislike for the change and I wasn’t sure if they realized that the option to watch it in subs without the unnecessarily changes, but being mad on principle whether you like dubs or not is definitely a valid reason.

I would be shocked if they didn’t go back an redub the line or change it for the home video release as it’s only a single line and wouldn’t take much effort at all, fan complaints for things like this though and help companies grow. Getting a little off topic but I remember a few years ago funimation was going to release an anime on bluray censored due to the content and fan backlash cause them to release it uncensored which I’m glad the fans raised a stink. I do love funimation and love their dubs but changes like this I agree don’t help anyone.

  194. landlock
    October 3, 2015 at 6:56 am

Seems to me that most people aren’t that upset that it’s less faithful and more to do with the fact it dared to mentioned Gamergate in a negative light from what I’ve been reading.

It honestly had no bearing on the overall episode at all. Still a good episode, no worse then any of the others.

  195. Bianca Ann Saracino
    Bianca Ann Saracino
    October 3, 2015 at 6:56 am

I agree that it lacks respect for the the original work, I admit I’m not one to care about direct translations are get mad when things are 100% faithful in translations but this case wasn’t just a simple translation but inserting a poor, unnecessary reference that didn’t really have a purpose. Though I will say that if I were you I wouldn’t lose all the hype yet, in the past Funimation has changed things due to fan outrage in the past like the to be censored anime releases, releasing uncensored after fan outcry and this is only a single line so it wouldn’t be hard at all to simply redub it for the streaming site and for the bluray/dvd release.

  196. British_Otaku
    October 3, 2015 at 7:03 am

Can you name translations short of Ace Attorney recently which got praised for blatantly changing lines? Purists are the status quo even before they choose to nod to GamerGate (which is definitely an easy trigger for some – har har).

I and plenty of others are mad that it simply messed up the dialogue, watching the clip and hearing about some old sitcom too. I’m the guy who is mad at changing yen to dollars in manga translations, not all people may be but yeah.

FUNi have screwed up by using dialogue from a censored airing of DBZ Kai on their DVD/Bluray set (a trucker survived an attack in rhe Android saga shouting “My Truck”) before and seem to be somewhat indifferent to whatever Tyson and others may do… Still this is probably the most heat they have gotten in for a few lines in ages.

There’s a couple issues that the (Prison School) writer isn’t taking into account.

1: His choice to shoehorn in something that, in no way, resembles the original material reflects BADLY on Funimation as a company, which ties into my 2nd point…

2: The mere fact that there was this reference in this anime makes me question all of Funimation’s dubs, past, present and future. How many of them had something shoe-horned in? How many of them are bad? In effect, the writer not only tainted this dub for fans, but tainted ALL of Funimation’s dubs for all anime fans. You can’t trust Funimation to get dubs right anymore.

and even with this article it shows how funimation isen’t even addressing the issue behind the outrage. they just ignoring it while so called addressing it basicly like how BP did with the oil spill.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9u0EL_u4nvw

Localization is the proper course for anime and video games.

However, Tyson Rinehart is a grade A moron. His change was not necessary in the slightest given the context, and his pathetic excuses for why he added it don’t pass muster.

i got banned from gematsu for wanting duals audio in persona 5 and got flamed by a army off english dub only lovers. yet they shouted profanity at me for just debating the issue.

siliconera is always a pain in the ass when you go and voice your honest opnion and not abide by their kiss ass policy and keep it so that there can not be a debate that the Mod doesen’t like talking about or when you criticize a game they like.

at the last part off your comment you might be right once they threaten the ban hammer all users involved start to kiss ass.

but with your words :Us filthy gaijin don’t understand that those Japanese can never do wrong. kinda makes me think your one off those english dub only lovers.

best way to watch anime is fansubs, i seriously can’t even imagine why anybody would want english dub only with distorted words it is barely the series creators wanted to show and convey.

i’m not against english dub it’s just that the more we get english dub in our anime sooner or later they might stop including japanese unless we proof a point that it’s neccessary for anime.

One of my favorite video games series is Yakuza, and I really appreciate an authentic, respectful translation. I don’t like what happened here, and if it’s something that happens often with FUNimantion titles I’m surprised fans haven’t cried foul enough to put a stop to it sooner.

That’s what their show is about, and they’ve been doing it for what 19 seasons now. Getting angry at south park for making fun of whatever thing you personally like is more that a bit different to this situation where they changed the script to insert a weird political statement seemingly out of nowhere.

I personally think they did wrong by including the #GamerGate there. It would’ve been better to use the actual translation since majority of the people watching the series are probably familiar enough with the Japanese culture enough to get the original line.

Furthermore mixing personal political statement(s) into the show also ruins the enjoyment for many. To include an anti-GamerGate line also shows really poor taste and knowledge of what GamerGate is. Considering what actually has happened in GG, what is going on currently in GG and the attitude of the person who came up with that line shows that he doesn’t understand the #GamerGate.

I think the person who made that line and the person who gave it a green light should be transferred to other duties. They don’t deserve to be fired from their job but a demotion would be in place for those guys.

There have been rare “localization touches” I thought were good. Jigen (Lupin the 3rd) saying “Sorry boss, I was possessed by the spirit of Steve McQueen.” was one of the best. And who doesn’t love that whole Spoony Bard thing from FFIV?

Generally speaking though, inserting YOUR political agenda into someone ELSE’S work should be rightly considered, in the BEST POSSIBLE LIGHT, as putting words in someone else’s mouth. It is presumptuous, rude, and crass.

There is…actually a very large, easily identifiable line between ‘localization’ and ‘pushing a political agenda.’ Things like this cross the line, knock over the mail box. back over it twice for good measure, then ride off flipping the double deuce while blaring music screaming about thug life.

So in addition to being an awful writer, he is a jerk and a liar. How is a reference to a fictional character that was dated before the core audience or the characters in the scene were even born ‘appropriate to the scene?’ It completely changed the tone of the scene.

Meanwhile, when and where did anyone identifying themselves with GameGate make rape threats toward anyone? Care to substantiate this claim, Mr. Rineheart? Or are you a loathsome coward? That shouldn’t bother you. After all, it’s just one line.

The short of it is that it’s a hashtag representing a general opposition to poor ethical practices in gaming journalism (clickbait, non-disclosures of personal or financial ties to the subject of the article, etc).

While it’s an issue that’s been a bother for many people over the years, the straw that broke the camel’s back was regarding one female developer allegedly giving sexual favors for favorable reviews. Because of this, gaming journalists in general fired back claiming that gamers in general are misogynists among a slew of other accusations in various ‘gamers are dead’ articles. Others, often referred to as social justice workers, decided to jump in as well to parrot the accusations now that they finally had an ‘easy’ target for their armchair activism.

This back and forth has been going on for over a year now.

What does it have to do with Prison School? Fuck all nothing. As others have pointed, the original line didn’t even have any kind of reference to controversies of any kind. It was essentially just an extended “I’m your senior, show some respect and shut up”.

  270. TheCynicalReaper
    October 4, 2015 at 3:12 am

They aren’t the original content creators. The only way that would work is if you want me to import the original manga series (untranslated, right outta Japan).

If your manga has become an anime then you’re already very well-off as a creator in the industry and have enough of a name for yourself to go places (within reach of your anime). The creator of Prison School is not TenNapel or Toby Fox. He’s doing just fine.

As much as I detest the site now and the people actually running it I do feel the need to make some details about the moderation there clearer. Mind you all of the following is possibly dated information and largely based on my own personal perception rather than being absolutely 100% solid facts.

Unless things have changed drastically since the higher ups there got rid of me, the moderation team is actually pretty split between being lenient and being draconian. That split also is generally obvious; Mods that came from the community, of which he is one, tend to be more lenient than those that have been around forever or came out of nowhere. The community ones could quite often be seen trying to direct things away from situations where bans would come up, and were quite often willing to discuss why action was taken if it had been. I don’t suspect that particular behavior happens much anymore though, as it was the official reason given for getting rid of me.

There’s also the issue of the rules being incredibly poorly defined and not openly presented, again not sure if that has since changed. Personally I had pushed to make the rules more clearly defined, so as to avoid the same general thing being grounds punishment or not depending on the slightest of changes or on which mod was viewing the situation. Almost all of it was ignored for being “redundant” as I recall.

If you’ve got an issue with their censorship, as one should, you should at least be aware of where it generally comes from. Be angry with the management and the moderators planted from there, rather than with everyone as a whole.

Really? They shoehorn something into an animation, that came from Japan, which is ONLY relevant in Amercia and ruining the anime for later generations. Brilliant, once more, you can clearly see the intelliquence of people, who think they have to make themselves a big name by shoving things into medias, that have NOTHING to do with the issue they have with. And aside of that, it even pulls the scene out of context as well, because in the japanese version, she mentions to speak more politely while in the english version it is a dumb gamergate joke, made by a guy, who does not even understands what Gamergate stands for. This is so cringeworthy as it could be, this guy is the reason why people have no damn idea about what Gamergate is really about; the correctness of gaming jornalism and not men
( OR women… yeah, that happens as well) who harass women in gaming.

The only reason censorship is always brought up & tie to journalism is what journalists have put in they web sites about questionable content & if any content is altered take catwoman in arkham knight for example how did that happen is censorship.

Removing content-censorship, minor edits ( altarted ) -censorship,

silence dissent by removing post banning orders etc etc – censorship

That what gamergate is about journalism ethics & censorship.

Doxxing people, insulting people, this shoehorn is a example & remember being called gamers ID are dead & being like a terrorists.

    October 5, 2015 at 2:13 pm

Indeed I do, I’ve been doing it for over a year now. Probably one of the more frequent mods you’ll spot if you visit there as well.

I don’t know the details of why you got banned… and I do know that some moderators stamp out stuff more so than I do, but in general we follow the same rule book where simply criticising a game wouldn’t be an issue. Perhaps if someone was a jerk calling names, calling out moderators and such… Regardless, I don’t know why you were banned.

I recommend that you chase up Miau (the head mod of sorts) on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MiauMiaut

Or alternately, the mod that you know banned you to ask for more details not that I expect a turnaround, but it is protocol more or less for us to be available there to talk things out if you can’t even reach us on Siliconera.

I don’t really see a contradiction between my moderating and hating censorship/edits anyway. Siliconera as well as Niche Gamer have rules which are laid out, in our case, we fight to ensure most posts will be productive and not port begging nonsense.

  286. British_Otaku
    October 5, 2015 at 2:41 pm

Thanks for the huge clarification in my place, dude. There is definitely a split of sorts. I don’t know who really came out of nowhere, but naturally people like myself who talked to a lot of users before the position will know how people tend to speak and try to ensure that they can stick around through preventing escalation (as much as I do like a few people who were banned – most of them crossed obvious lines and it isn’t like us mods can fight each other to redefine rules openly).

We still need to get the rules to be somewhere other than the Open Thread page desperately, but the selection process of sorts means that users either know the rules or get the impression of what they are by nature, far from good, but functional. :/

Since you aren’t at Siliconera now, you might not know that Ishaan (who I and another mod were brainstorming stuff with) isn’t writing there though he does comment often enough. I more or less knew about Spencer for a while, but now he is the one I chat with not about rules but occasional article ideas. Maybe, I’ll pitch something about the rules with time to him.

  287. British_Otaku
    October 5, 2015 at 3:02 pm

Going into a poorly presented rant with typos and poor punctuation even if it has some facts about GG and Zoe Quinn, then dropping a petition for Persona 5 dual audio isn’t relevant to the script. My issue is that I would say “GamerGate isn’t relevant to the scene” and end the post there instead of adding baggage, almost everyone in the comments here already agree on many levels with you to begin with.

I don’t mean to pick on you if English isn’t your first language or anything else, but less weak posts especially ones which drop irrelevant petitions in the middle would be better even if it would be less posts.

I don’t remember which comment section you were talking with Puchinri or the exact subject, but I’ll say from experience that I debate/argue with her fairly often and posts like yours are likely to be deleted even if I liked them. You didn’t even do the foundational steps to start an debate with her, so she seemed to just shrug you off (the same steps I’d do with someone who just seemed annoying in general). If she or another mod deleted your posts, it may be because they offered nothing relevant to the topic of the article.

If you actually did present good points properly (I don’t think you did, but let us assume), I think she would have at least engaged with some of the points even if she agreed to disagree by the end (as myself and her often do).

More harm? Yes. You mentioned Zoe Quinn (when the aim should be Nathan Grayson + Kotaku) and positive ratings (when it is coverage!). Imagine if someone was linked to this discussion in the comments, aside from some comments which edge on piracy more than I’d like but that’s their choice they have another ZQ person who seems to only speak “femenists” over one year on. :/

It isn’t that you shouldn’t say some names or share some links, but if they don’t have any relevance to a discussion, you can’t expect them to be welcome. You could have taken just a little more time and had the chat. And you could have chosen a wiser target than Puchinri to start it.

EDIT: A hour video? Instead of actually explaining your posts well in a few paragraphs? We don’t exactly have rules against that (we do against .GIFs) but that was also a bad idea short of the Open Thread maybe.

  288. British_Otaku
    October 5, 2015 at 3:11 pm

You won’t need to sugarcoat a word as long as you stay clear, coherent, relevant and polite.

(I know you may consider one or more of those things to be sugarcoating points, but bear with me)

I haven’t gotten into an argument about dual audio options in a while, but two of our frequent users does love their dubs so much one of them has it practically in their name. Both of them manage to post frequently just because they make structured posts and don’t seem to attack viewpoints even if someone says that the English dub of One Piece for example isn’t great.

One user’s thoughts among others is that he expects more than just a few subtitles for the wait and that fans can pull off free subtitle projects for games in some cases. A decent point which people tend to respect.

  289. British_Otaku
    October 5, 2015 at 3:24 pm

I won’t speak about Gematsu, though there is a running gag that people who get banned on Siliconera go there which many are aware of. >_>

However, it isn’t a “serious hypocritical scumbag move” to moderate for a site (especially if you can’t point out a case of me stepping in as a censor of thought) which has rules which I support while I don’t like censorship or editing of games. I was accepted as well as other community -> mod types since I seemed to make productive posts and seemed pretty frequent.

I still don’t know which game you were criticising (though you imply it was Japanese here) but any ban probably doesn’t come from it being Japanese though it is statistically likely that it was just from what we cover.

I’ve been criticising Unlimited World RED harshly on plenty of sites including Siliconera before I became a mod no less, so it doesn’t seem relevant. More recently, Fire Emblem If/Fates is a case of a game which faced a lot of bitterness from comments whether it was looking like it may be like Awakening but worse, a Phoenix mode addition or seemingly like it had a date rape drug romance according to Tumblr.

Bans are far from instant (unless you are linking some quick rich scheme) anyway.

  290. British_Otaku
    October 5, 2015 at 3:50 pm

And I didn’t want to talk about Gematsu much… >_> They do seem to have a high chance of lots of people bagging on individuals, while we tend to encourage people to mark and move on, it isn’t necessary to comment on so so posts.

Anyway, their rules aren’t too different to us in general structure even if the community is very different in practice: http://gematsu.com/commenting-guidelines

Since I recommended that Breezer contacts a mod to see what we can do about his ban, I recommend the same for you. Fortunately, you don’t even need a Twitter to do it unlike us (a good idea!): http://gematsu.com/contact-mod

Unfortunately, my guess is that you were banned and flamed since you “talked about dual audio being missing too often and dropped the petition link left and right rather than adding to conversation or sharing a petition in a natural way”.

The E.X. Troopers thread (I love the game, I’m alright with only one post in the thread every few months if I can’t think of a smart addition or encourage more people naturally) I shared with you is an example of me parodying that habit I think you might have, even if you happen to asking only in games which don’t have a confirmed English dub yet. It is against the rules to “whine” as Gematsu puts it.

I’ve rewritten Scenario 3 of General Whining from Gematsu’s rules to be about voice work: “The western version of a Japanese game is confirmed to not have Japanese audio in some shape or form. Do not comment complaining about dual audio. In some cases, these changes are necessary to release the game in a market outside of Japan. If you believe that not to be the case, take it up with the publisher via their social channels.”

you do know that most ppl are pretty retarded right? like they don’t even know the true meaning behind Gamergate other than what femenist and the dumbass scriptwriter made it out to be. and also it woulden’t matter how many times it was said as long as more ppl see what it is meant to be.

Puchinri has picked sides like constantly on her own preverenses which is ridiculous for a Mod to do, they are supposse to stay neutral. i used the term feminazi considering she is a femenist she felt butthurt by that term. and stop with the bullshit about femenism being about euality for woman and man cause that’s just bullshit. there is a reason why femenism is at war with atheism.

also i find it funny how you wanna shift blame from Zoe quin to Nathan Grayson + Kotaku, sure they are also to blame but that doesen’t mean she get’s a OK pass to fuck anybody for ratings with the excuse, cause the guy should have known better bullshit.

the hour video was for Puchinri cause i told her to go educate herself on what femenism really means and what it has become in todays world, offcourse she deleted it right away or else i might have been able to prove a point against her femenist believes.

This whole article itself is about femenism really and how GG is now the term to call men as misogynistic rapist. cause that’s what the scene implies the guy is.

Sky Wizards? A recent FUNimation streamed anime I see. My only comment can be that I never heard of the series, not even the LNs to know about the issues.

Being in the UK, I can only watch their take on Sky Wizards illegally probably so I’m bound to be even more out of the loop. I suppose, I’ll take notes to be mad at that one when it comes out or has a trailer anyway. I had to find a Youtube channel which illegally uploaded a Senran Kagura dub trailer (yep, they don’t even let us see trailers) to learn that their marketing and voices are so so: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIeF-7Sitkw

Of course, we got news that Senran Kagura’s anime from FUNimation didn’t have the extras so I didn’t import it.

The concern is GamerGate? Sure why not. I still think it is based on the year long hashtag being more topical than a reference to Happy Days (never heard of it till Prison School’s clip introduced it to me >_>).

Fair enough. I don’t stay close to the dubbed circuits much myself to know but apparently Sgt Frog and Shin Chan are pretty good despite notable edits and people liked Duel Masters. All of which happen to be parody dubs, in one case of a lackluster show and in two others apparently replacing a lot of jokes for a Ace Attorney like effect. Not watched much of any of them though.

I think the issue may be that no one cares about Sky Wizards to begin with. Everyone knows about EA and Capcom’s DLC nonsense even if Street Fighter X Tekken got more attention than Mass Effect 3 (which had bigger problems), you’ll have to look hard to find people invested in smaller games with issues not that I know that one released then.

NicheGamer only reported on this for the GamerGate angle? Not sure if that’s fair even if it does likely mean a bigger audience, Prison School already was a popular manga with folks here, NG reported on Japan responding to Shimoneta and it happens to fall under edits. It would be a less popular article if it only name dropped Fonz, amazingly so, but I feel it still warrants coverage.

Anime News Network also covered this anyway: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/daily-briefs/2015-10-03/funimation-addresses-prison-school-dub-comments-over-gamergate-line/.93736

(Yeah we really need a serious blog about all of the screwups)

you say ppl need to make a relevant point, i don’t know if you’ve noticed most points that are being made on a gaming news site are totally useless. they either praise a game cause they are a fanboy or they make some retarded statment like i’m going to buy this game.

atleast with my statment i get ppl to fucking think or research it. hell even with the article with Puchinri,
called Capcom Didn’t Want To Make Devil May Cry 4’s Gloria Vulgar, But Did Anyway.

i tried to keep it to a minimum by stating:
these days with dumb western political correctness they would even feel cartoon characters need rights. that kinda shows how insane this
    world is.

before ya know it your not allowed to dream or it might sexcist or dangerous.

meaning in the sense that the only Reason capcom thought it was Vulgar was in western eyes, cause let’s be honest japanese users coulden’t give a crap about some skin.

I haven’t seen it (not in its entirely at least,) but I have heard all about the dub’s disregard for the original script, and if this is the same asshole pulling this shit across multiple dubs then why the fuck isn’t he out on his ass yet?

NicheGamer predates GamerGate and not every reader or writer involved is going to claim that they agree with every word under the hashtag or even big people or talking points in general, but this is one of the last comment sections or websites where you need to explain it. You could have at least responded directly to someone who was clearly curious or asking (not that I think your writing is great being frank).

You can’t be neutral on a moving train… Jokes aside, there aren’t exactly rules against individual mods having their own opinions and mindsets and using the term “feminazi” is a red alarm to me not just someone who reads the Mary Sue. We don’t welcome people who throw ad hominem labels to individuals/groups in general and you can’t be surprised if her or me decide to act based on rules which the site defined.

Thanks to the topic name in your other post, I found the line of comments you had and am honestly surprised that she left your earlier “feminazi” post alone though she clearly deleted some. Anyway, I also express my preferences clearly and even argue with mods about other subjects, but I can’t argue with her if she don’t appear to be clear or on topic and started off with that word.

All of that said, I invite you to prove a valid use for the word “feminazi” over “feminist who did _____” (which may also be topical but avoids invoking Godwin at least). Even if you can find a quote from a prominent feminist who suggested concentration camps seriously or worse, it isn’t immediately relevant to the discussion there.

    Judging from your discussion:

It seems that was the core issue. Imagine if someone called everyone on the opposite side, “insecure MRAs” that would also be inappropiate and off topic. On which note, it appears that The_Crimson_Otaku mentioned “insecure males” but fortunately in the context of them (though I imagine some people may have been female or trans or whatever) leading to Anita getting more of a spotlight that’s true and fair even if inferring that anyone on a single side is responsible for something sort of related is a bad habit.

Honestly, I do probably watch a lot of videos that you do but I don’t care enough to even talk about whatever atheism vs feminism war is going on, not even here. >_>

Of course, I want blame to go to Nathan, he is the reporter and Kotaku is the publication. Perhaps in an ideal world, we could expect developers to let us know they supported a writer’s Patreon, had a lunch with the writer or fucked them silly prior to, after or during articles, but as the reporter is the one sharing the information. It is on them. Should Zoe or any developer with a relationship with the writer get some blame? Assuming they deliberately did it to manipulate reception, you could reach and argue that, I still feel that the reporter gets the bulk as a journalist/blogger for accepting it and/or not disclosing it.

I’d hate to shame developers/journalists out of having any relationships or supporting a Patreon from the other group, it isn’t difficult to leave a brief notice or assign another writer.

If you wanted to prove a point to her, you should have been ready to prove it in words, not an hour long video after she already decided that you might be a troll. At least, pick a shorter video while making a clear and relevant point. As far as I can tell, you hadn’t even provoked her into making a point of her own to debunk.

The article doesn’t even use the word “feminism” once, at most it nods a poorly thought out tweet from Tyson and I know from reading some other posts from him (too many to dig at the moment) that he seems fairly chill about GG (not that it excuses a trash line). He actually came to agree with one of the more chill GG people chatting with him but of course dozens people after that pursued him since Twitter is such an open conversation (worth noting how few people he blocked if any – he even retweets some GG posts and jokes). The scene itself? Anzu jokes that GamerGate folks are creeps not rapists.

I’ll proudly argue that Siliconera has the some of most useful useless points around. Using the same article, we have some people discussing how the character barely has any use as another sign of DMC4 being rushed, some comments about how they feel about the Gloria = Trish reveal and a huge and fantastic comment about how the article is clickbait (it got 2 upvotes, one from me and the other from Puchinri despite siding against the writer).

Perhaps, you should have been even more direct though your first post was fine even if Puchinri has some sort of point about a conservative side in Japan (even if you can reply with tons of H-games and Doujinshi aside from mainstream franchises).

Anyway, if your post was in an article about Gloria’s design being censored notably from an initial showing (ideally a gameplay build) or an article about how a game is censored in general with that sort of excuse. Yeah. Puchinri only had the room to push you as you didn’t talk directly about it. At first, “Western political correctness is off the charts”, second “Feminazis and Anita you know” and finally one hour video proof when she hasn’t presented an argument.

I understand you, but you have to be flexible on the internet. Like Mangatraders. So many people took that for granted – myself included – but then, one day… poof. Of course, mangatraders came back later, but you get my point. The internet is fluid, you need to know how to navigate its waves. Always have a backup plan. My current backup plan is private anime trackers, and the backup of the backup plan is to use a downloader like DomDomSoft for it.

I took UndergroundGamer for granted and thought our museum of old games would last forever. Never again.

Localization teams should not add-in anything that alters the anime. It should be important to note that, translation ‘changes’ the content, localization may slightly alter the content to fit a specific region. Next time, they anime producers should consider using services like http://www.localizer.co to localize the content AND they must certainly ask the audience if they prefer the content to be slightly adjusted to fit their region OR prefer it to be as close to the original version as possible.

  303. Fenrir007
    October 6, 2015 at 6:01 pm

It’s not hopeful. It’s about being one step ahead. Whenever there was a crackdown on something, I was already on something else. I’ve been through usenet, DCC, emule etc etc and, whenever a place or “system” started attracting too much heat, I was already hopping onto the next one. It’s a cat and mouse game, you just gotta stay ahead.

On the other hand, there were a few occasions where this was okay (IE Ghost Stories) but shoehorning in politics where there should be none really shouldn’t be necessary. ESPECIALLY in an anime like this.

It wasn’t funny, it made zero sense, their PR response to the backlash was equally nonsensical, and that whole Gamergate thing was blown way out of proportion in the first place… but it’s nothing to boycott Funimation over.

Unless it becomes a recurring thing (I don’t think it will considering the way so many people reacted), I don’t think there’s any reason to hold this incident against them. Plus, they’ve gotten WAY more political than that in the past. Hell, I swing about as far right as they come, but even I was able to tolerate the ridiculous conservative straw man that they turned one of the characters into in their adaptation of Shin Chan, and Georgie was a WAY bigger part of the show than one poorly written line (plus, I’ll admit he got a laugh out of me once in a while, like that time he compared Shin to Bill Clinton XD). I even bought all the DVDs!

Obviously, you are still advocating for their release of the show, then, but at the same time stealing from those who worked on everything else, like the translation and production team.

Just switch from the “dub” option on their channel, to the “sub” option.

That being said, I was on a mobile browser, with headphones in (I was working) and when this line hit, it buggered the shit out of me. I was incredulous and still have to do double takes. It just sounds so incongruous and disruptive in context. Boggles the mind.

Regardless, it’s easier to just switch to the “sub” option instead. Continues to keep an interest in the show going, without supporting the things that you dislike.

Well, Sonny Strait and Ian Sinclair condoned Rinehart’s behaviour, Jamie Marchi is a friend and supporter of basically everyone GG is against {amazing then that she seems to work heavily on every single anime that should be offending the everloving fuck out of her, like Panty & Stocking, Highschool DxD, Heaven’s Lost Property and of course this} and boasted that she high-fived Rinehart for writing the GG line, Liam O’Brien literally thinks GamerGate has a headquarters where members sit around on piles of money like Wario while thinking up new ways to harass women in gaming, Scott Freeman recently got put away for eight counts of possession and purchase of child porn, and Sam Riegel openly called one of his GG-supporting female fans an idiot when she confronted him for mocking GG supporters who dare to stand up for themselves, while the otherwise cool J. Michael Tatum actually defended the shitty line-changing itself as Rinehart and Marchi “just doing their job”, so that’s not a good start.

I don’t know what a gamergate is and I didn’t know who auther was before i looked him up. While they do take too much liberties (and use jokes that fly over some viewers heads), it isn’t that big a deal. I have seen the dub version and the dialogue is dreadfully dull. It’s a wonder it’s so successful in Japan if not for the animation humor. Sometimes it’s better to input western humor so we as a Western audience can relate. I know in some anime subs they use jokes specific to Japan that I don’t get until I do research. And if that sort of dialogue were to be translated directly to English, we’d be as a whole (I know you otakus are nuts and know every little inside Japanese joke) we’d be lost and less in tuned with the series.

Btw, about that. It’s not like actually buying the animes even helps the original authors. There was a thread on reddit that mentioned of Gintama’s author saying that he doesn’t get much at all from the anime adaptations, that he was only payed up front with one-time licensing fee. Otherwise he doesn’t even get any profits or royalties from it. And if we’re talking about 4kids, they been holding back royalties from the creators of the yugioh franchise for years, before they had been sent a lawsuit their way. So these dubbing companies don’t necessarily give much back to the studios that made the anime in the first place. They prolly worked out some kinda 70-30 deal, their way. You know, Murica and capitalism ftw.

And after that? Pft, forget about funding the original authors/creators themselves, there wouldn’t be anything left even if the anime studios in Japan didn’t fuck them over already. The author of Ginatama said that if you really want to support to him to live enough comfortably, then you should just go buy the manga.
