Funcom Announces New Open World Survival Game “Conan Exiles”

Funcom has revealed that they are currently working on a new open world survival game based on the Conan property that they became the steward of last year.

No doubt riding the success of other similar games such as Rust, Ark, The Forest, and Day-Z, Funcom plans to release the new Conan game via Steam early access first, then port the game to consoles sometime thereafter. Conan Exiles will feature both single and multiplayer modes within a large open world environment that will probably draw on experience the developer built up while working on 2008’s Age of Conan.

Not much is known at the time, but the press release does a fair job of setting the tone:

Hungry, thirsty and alone, your very first battle is that against the harsh environment. Grow crops or hunt animals for food. Harvest resources to build weapons and tools. Build a shelter to survive. Ride across a vast world and explore alone, or band together with other players to build entire settlements and strongholds to withstand fierce invasions.
When strong enough, march forth into battle and wage war against your enemies as you fight to dominate the exiled lands. Sacrifice enemy players on the altars of the gods and shift the balance of power your way. Unleash your fury in savage, fast-paced combat and execute bloody and bone-crushing attacks that will see heads rolling and limbs flying.

You can keep track of Conan Exiles through the game’s official website.

You just don’t see enough ritual human sacrifice in games these days.

Since Age of Conan has nudity will this game have it as well?
Will SJWs call for a new progressive Conan game?

I haven’t jumped on the open world action game train yet because all of the games seem like half baked betas to me.
If they manage to make this one more polished I’ll be interested, and giving it a conan background might make it more interesting than the average zombie or survival game because magic, lore, etc.

On their site they stress the importance of multiplayer. Ugh.

Goddammit Funcom, I want single player games with these properties.
Who wouldn’t want to play Conan in some Witcher-style RPG, or a
turn-based spinoff of the Secret World? Playing with other people is DULL.

“Early access open world survival” is a lot of warning signs. I’ve handled highly dangerous liquids with less warning signs.

I hope so and I hope we can create our own character. I really like carving monsters as a topless female Barbarian in Age of Conan. Am I a perv? Probably but still it was cool.

Yeeeah, not feeling this one. Why open-world survival sandbox again?

I’m okay with these types of games but this feels too blatant in trying to ride on the early access moneywagon.
