Ex-Blizzard Devs Making RTS That Feels Like Evolution of WarCraft and StarCraft

Evolution of Warcraft and StarCraft

Ex-Blizzard developers Frost Giant Studios are making an RTS they’re describing as an evolution of WarCraft and StarCraft, among other big aspirations for their debut title.

“We very much want to build a game that feels like an evolution of Blizzard RTS games,” co-founder Tim Morten, former production lead on StarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void, said to Op Attack.

He added, “Our influences will include Warcraft III, Broodwar, and StarCraft II. We expect to be as different as those games are to each other.” Morten founded Frost Giant Studios back in October of last year with Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne lead campaign designer Tim Campbell.

From the get-go Frost Giant received an initial block of funding to provide them a foundation to develop an early prototype for the game. However, it already seems like this won’t be enough as Morten is debating on how they will fund the rest of the game.

“We haven’t considered paths for pre-release player funding yet, because we’re so early in our process,” he said. “Separate from funding, we’re very committed to having discourse with the community throughout our development. This is currently happening through the FrostGiant subreddit, and through the monthly newsletter that anyone can sign up to receive at FrostGiant.com.”

Back when Frost Giant was officially announced last year, Morten said the goal with their game is that whatever it turns out to be, they want players to “share broadly with friends,” and that “building a worthy successor will take time, but we’re incredibly excited and grateful to carry real-time strategy forward.”

The initial set of funding for Frost Giant’s first game included $4.7 million in seed funding from Bitkraft Ventures, funding which they’ll use to “begin building a prototype for gameplay, conduct consumer research, and expand operations.”

We’ll keep you guys posted regarding Frost Giant’s debut title, whenever that comes to fruition. Hopefully it really will be an evolution of WarCraft and StarCraft, and lives up to their legacy.
