Epic Games have provided more details on Battle Royale game Fortnite coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
As revealed during the Unreal Engine 5 reveal and demo on PlayStation 5, the game will be heading to next-gen consoles. Epic Games have now revealed more information via an announcement on the game’s official website.
The game will be the same version of Fortnite, optimized for the new systems and features they bring. While Epic Games “can’t share specifics at the moment,” they did state this would improve performance and visuals. They also re-iterated that the game would launch in Unreal Engine 4, and later migrate to Unreal Engine 5 in mid-2021.
Epic Games also plan to support cross-progression of platforms across console generations as well, allowing players to keep their accounts and items. They also plan to support cross-play “across all platforms, including current and next-generation consoles.” Finally, Epic Games stated they will continue to support the current platforms in tandem with the next-generation.
While the release date was not announced, we know from our prior coverage that the game is set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X when they launch. Both are slated to release Holiday 2020.
In earlier news, Epic Games announced that all Fortnite competitions and tournaments in 2020 will now be held online, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Nintendo of Japan also states that 160,000 Nintendo accounts had been illicitly accessed, where some users had their linked PayPal accounts being used to buy around $100 worth of Fortnite V-Bucks.
In 2019, Epic Games had been issued a class action lawsuit from a Montreal court, alleging the game was too addictive. This was started by the parents of two minors (aged 10 and 15). Their legal representatives claimed the case had “basically the same legal basis” as tobacco products requiring warning labels.
Fortnite is available on Windows PC, Mac (both via the Epic Games Store), Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Android, iOS, and Holiday 2020 on PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.
