First Party Games Still in Development for PS Vita, According to Sony

ps vita 10-29-15-1

We’ve learned (via VG247) that Sony apparently has first-party development studios working on PS Vita games, despite previous reports saying the company has moved on to focus entirely on the PlayStation 4.

The question regarding first-party support for the handheld came up during an interview with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s Jim Ryan, who said the company still has content in the works for the handheld.

“We’re no longer in the business of triple-A development of games for Vita,” Ryan said. “But there is still first-party Vita contentbeing worked upon.”

While Ryan did not confirm what sort of games to expect, it’s worth mentioning the PS Vita was mostly absent during their recent Paris Games Week presentation. It’s also worth mentioning that Sony worldwide studios boss Shuhei Yoshida recently said the “climate is not healthy” for a PS Vita successor.

I wish Sony was clear and precise on what they say. Its almost as if they dont know what to do with the Vita. They went from the Vita being basically a mini-PS3, add-on for remote play for the PS4 and now this.

    October 29, 2015 at 2:41 pm

Wait what? Didn’t they just say they didn’t have any teams working on new stuff for Vita? What the fuck is with Sony? Have they gone completely bipolar? I mean shit, I’d love it for them to continue supporting the Vita, but make up your minds for fuck’s sake Sony.

They aren’t. All of Sony’s first party studios make AAA games; Oreshika, Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice, Killzone Mercenary et al were AAA games. So since they aren’t making AAA games for the PSV, since all of their studios only make AAA games then it stands to reason that there are no games coming for the PSV~.

The continuous ambiguity and vagueness is an attempt to save some face much like when they announced the system was a legacy device then backtracked saying that was a mistake~.

They never knew what to do with it, that’s why the system flopped. Right now? My guess is that they prefer to give some false hope than to keep on getting the backlash of the 12M people who bought one~.

Sure, if you count Virtual Toys – of Muppets and Looney Tunes fame – as a developer of first-party Vita content.

More or less the same position Nintendo is in with its latest console, although that’s at least still getting a minimal level of support.

Probably more shit like those muppet, loony tunes sport game and other games they did release recently. No thanks Sony. I would not mind a new 3d Loony Tunes platform but at least a decent one…

This sounds like Vita is getting PSN games that will also be on Vita to be, not as much individual full game releases just for the Vita.

  14. Mr0303
    October 29, 2015 at 3:15 pm

I think this is just damage control after the recent backlash. I doubt they are developing anything major. Nothing was particularly successful on the Vita.

  15. DariusQ
    October 29, 2015 at 3:18 pm

My guess is that this all stems from some executive shooting off their mouth when silence would have sufficed. Everyone knows Sony themselves aren’t producing any Vita specific content anymore but to actually come out and say it is just plain stupid.

I disagree, Nintendo keeps on making games for the Wii U. That their production times are goddamn awful is an entirely different matter but I don’t consider the Wii U to be getting less games than the Wii or Gamecube did [first party wise] in their days. The Wii U still has the new Star Fox and Zelda coming… someday, I guess. Plus XBX which hasn’t come to the West yet and wasn’t there some kind of Amiibo BS game coming out too? Plus this year they released Mario Maker and Devil’s Turd; the latter which I understand they funded. Also, they brought over Fatal Frame, better late [and censored apparently] than never~.

In comparison, after Oreshika in March [and that’s in the West, since the game was released July last year] Sony has done exactly nothing for the PSV. Nintendo’s times have always been terrible and take too long, they just thought that by magic third parties would want to make games for them to fill in the gaps. In comparison, Sony literally abandoned the PSV and, by magic, a lot of third parties jumped on board~.

I mean, two years ago nobody would have thought Squeenix would make new games for it~.

I present you all the people who believe in that statement:

Let’s be frank… by 1st party games we don’t mean games like Murasaki Baby (he believes that XDEV games = 1st party)… by 1st party games we mean games like Freedom Wars, Uncharted, Wipeout, Oreshika, Killzone… and apart Uncharted and Killzone none are even close to being AAA game.

Which is totally fine because IMHO Vita doesn’t need AAA games. It needs B-AA budget games.

  23. Phelan

Sony is incredibly hypocritical. First they claim to drop Vita support and label it a legacy console, then they pull a 180 and say this. I honestly doubt anything remarkable is actually being developed for the system, and this is just a statement made to save face regarding the Vita and its fanbase.

I just picked up a PS TV for 35 bucks. The memory card cost 80. XD

Seriously, there were tons of problems with Vita that were apparent early on:

First, the lack of second shoulder buttons made it hard to really have a lot of PS1 and PS2 content work well. (I know about the back pad, but that was gimmicky and hardly ever used- a proper 2nd set of shoulder buttons would have been cheaper and better)

Secondly, the memory was proprietary instead of just being cheap ol’ microSD cards like it should’ve- that turned off a ton of people from adoption.

Thirdly, the game library did not include every PSP game ever, and it absolutely should have. It should have been something like “If it was available on the PSP, it is available in the playstation store”.

Fourth, the playstation store has always been cheap on sales- people get invested in a platform when they have more titles on it, and people don’t buy a ton of titles at full price. Make it easy to be invested in the platform.

Fifth, cross compatibility was infrequent and up to the developer. Sony should have just developed a straight up 100% emulation solution for the PS3 and 4 that would have allowed people to play any Vita game on those systems- then, developers would develop for Vita since it would automatically mean getting their games on two other platforms for free.

But yeah, Sony has had their head up their ass for a while, so no surprise that they made so many missteps with the Vita.

As for the argument that Vita memory cards are higher quality than lower-priced microSD cards, I encourage everyone to google search the “Vita 64gb failure” for the only memory card worth buying in terms of being the best cost/size ratio. I haven’t downloaded a single digital game and I’m already over 25% on my 8gb. It’s ridiculous. I’m not going to respond to the pro-Sony shill in this comments section, and probably a paid one, so this message is for everyone else.
I personally use a high grade orange 64gb Samsung microSD in my phone that performs incredibly well, reasonably priced at less than 40 dollars CAD, and haven’t had any problems with it in the 2 years I’ve had it. I wish I could say the same for any Vita memory card ever.

  64. InfectedAI
    October 30, 2015 at 2:25 pm

You’re in the minority here. Lots of people skipped the Vita because of the proprietary memory cards. Who cares if it’s a one time purchase that’s irrelevant. I can buy a 32 gig SD or MicroSD for ~20 dollars rather easily without looking for a sale. The Vita equivalent is around 60 dollars.

As for corruption in my entire life I’ve had a single MicroSD card go bad, and that was most likely cause by the device it was in being physically hit extremely hard.

The fact of the matter is the Vita is overpriced, people don’t like feeling ripped off, and the competition is a lot cheaper. All this is going to drive people away.
