Get a Direct PlayStation 4 to Xbox One Comparison of Final Fantasy XV’s Platinum Demo

While a PC version is probably in the works, Digital Foundry has done yet another direct video comparison between the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Final Fantasy XV’s recently released Platinum Demo.

They’ve more or less confirmed the PlayStation 4 version generally runs at a 1600×900 resolution, while the Xbox One version mostly runs at 1408×792. The PS4 version can max out at 1920×1080 at times, but when things get hectic it bottoms out to 1568×882. In comparison, the Xbox One version maxes out at 1568×882, and goes as low as 1360×768, which is nearly 720p territory.

Digital Foundry makes a note in saying the Xbox One version always consistently performs below the PlayStation 4 version in terms of resolution, however Square Enix has implemented their own aggressive in-house anti-aliasing, meaning no matter the resolution, things can look blurred.

Square Enix implemented the aforementioned dynamic resolution to help solve the game’s framerate problems (an issue stemming from the engine being outdated and not optimized well for modern consoles). Despite this, both versions can drop to 15 FPS during the final boss fight.

Digital Foundry also noted that little improvement has been seen in visual performance since the game’s previous demo, Episode Duscae. With six months to go until the game’s September release, there is concern over whether or not Square Enix can improve the game’s performance.

Final Fantasy XV is launching on September 30th for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
