Final Fantasy XIV Online Free on Playstation Store Until May 26

Square Enix have made the starter edition of massively multiplayer online game Final Fantasy XIV free for a limited time on the PlayStation Store.

According to the official Square Enix news blog, players will be able to claim and keep the base game of Final Fantasy XIV Online until May 26th. Once it is claimed it is theirs forever, which is similar to promotions done on Steam in the past for other titles.

The starter edition for Final Fantasy XIV Online includes the base game Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and thirty days of free game time. Those who enjoy the game will need to continue paying a monthly subscription after their free thirty days are up, and purchase the expansion packs separately to experience content beyond level 50.

You can watch the original trailer for Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on the PlayStation 4 below.

Originally released in 2010 as only Final Fantasy XIV Online, the game received largely negative criticism. The game was redesigned in 2013 with a new creative team, and relaunched as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The relaunch of the game has since reinvigorated its online community, and Final Fantasy XIV now has three expansion packs and over 18 million subscribers.

The latest expansion Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers came out in July of last year. The new expansion raised the level cap to 80, introduced the new Dancer and Gunbreaker jobs, and the Viera and Hrothgar races.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers takes players to one of the many reflections of the in-game world, this one called Norvrandt. Much of life on Norvrandt has been wiped out after the world was suffused with aetherial light.

It is up to the Warrior of Light to take on a new mantle as the Warrior of Darkness, and bring back harmony to Norvrandt.

The Final Fantasy XIV Online: Starter Edition can be claimed for free until May 26th on the Playstation Store.

Final Fantasy XIV is out now on Windows PC, (via the SE Store, and Steam), PlayStation 4, and coming soon to Xbox One. In case you missed it, you can find our Shadowbringers expansion review here (we can’t recommend it enough!)
