Square Enix has confirmed in their Final Fantasy XI press conference today the future for the long-running MMORPG.

The game will see its services ending in March of next year on both Playstation 2 and Xbox 360, while there is still life yet in the PC version.

PC fans will be able to continue playing the game through its next expansion, which is poised to lead the game up into its big finale, dubbed the “Rhapsodies of Vana’diel.”

This will happen in three large content updates, which are rolling out in May, August, and November of this year. These updates will include new battles, rewards, and the return of characters from the entire game’s history.

Finally, the “Goddess’s Gala” in-game event is going to be held some time in the near future. The festival is meant to celebrate the players and their accomplishments, and there will be a multitude of campaigns to partake in.

It’s worth pointing out that Rhapsodies of Vana’diel is not a premium expansion, or a new piece of disc based content – it will be made available to all current players.

Final Fantasy Grandmasters was also revealed as an option to carry on the legacy of Final Fantasy XI, whenever the PC version is inevitably shut down after its release over a decade ago.
