Final Fantasy X | X-2 HD Remaster Coming to PC on May 12

final fantasy x 05-09-16-1

Square Enix is releasing both Final Fantasy X HD and Final Fantasy X-2 HD on PC, via Steam.

The games will be released together as a package on May 12th, and they will cost $30. The game’s Steam page was just opened, which you can find here.

In case you need a refresher of the classic Japanese RPGs, you can find that below:

FINAL FANTASY X tells the story of a star blitzball player, Tidus, who journeys with a young and beautiful summoner named Yuna on her quest to save the world of Spira from an endless cycle of destruction wrought by the colossal menace Sin.

FINAL FANTASY X-2 returns to the world of Spira two years after the beginning of the Eternal Calm. Having been shown a mysterious but familiar image in a sphere, Yuna becomes a Sphere Hunter and along with her companions Rikku and Paine, embarks on a quest around the world to find the answers to the mystery within.

Based on the international versions of the games that were previously only released in Japan and Europe, FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster brings these timeless classics forward to the current generation of fans, old and new alike.

Key Features:

  • Characters, monsters, and environments have been fine-tuned to HD detail, providing a richer, deeper FINAL FANTASY visual experience.
  • Other features in the PC version include remastered/rearranged BGM,
  • International Edition content,
  • Auto-save and 5 game boosters including high speed and no encounter modes.

at this rate they’re going to port all of their games to PC

    good

maybe they will branch into other franchises once FF is done, they still got some games to go afterwards unless there’s some legal issue getting int the way like Sony or Nintendo co-publishing them and stuff

any chance of kingdom hearts or bravely on PC?

I’m personally hoping for more stuff from their days of Square Soft and early SE, so pretty much the Mana series, Threads of Fate, Crono Trigger/Cross, ect. and of course Dragon Quest.

Japanese ports to PC are almost always terrible due to poor programming techniques due to them never having programmed on a PC before. They tie the game speed to frame rates and lock frame rates to 30 fps, they usually miss most of the expected graphical options, and often don’t let you change the abysmal control scheme. I’ll be shocked if this doesn’t suffer from at least one (likely all) of those problems.

FFIX is not Android emulation. You were rused.
    >take up way more space in the HDD than the PSX/PS2 isos
Lightning Returns takes up less than 20 gigs. XIII-2 takes up less than 30. Type 0 HD takes up less than 30. These bloated releases are a thing of the past. X/X-2 HD is two games, so naturally its slightly bigger than the norm.
    >Type 0 HD
It has a lot more features than the PS4 version. It is literally the best version of Type 0 that exists. I’m not sure how its a bad port. You don’t like having all those graphics options, extra screenshot modes and haste options? You don’t want to turn off that awful motion blur that’s in the PS4 version? Or are you one of those people who thought it ran poorly because they set the anti-aliasing settings on maximum, which rendered the game in 4k and then downsampled it, and then wondered why they couldn’t run it well?

FFX/X-2 HD on PS4 obviously uses higher quality assets than the Vita version, so the file size there is ~30GB already, and 32GB after taking into account save files.

The PC release is probably the exact same + 8-10GB of Japanese voices included.

  60. Smug
    Smug
    May 10, 2016 at 8:48 pm

That does not justify the lack of optimization for the PC version. Uncompressed files are bullshit and you know it. It’s just a way to eat more bandwidth from legal customers and probably a naive thought from publishers to discourage pirates.

PC version shouldnt even take up more than 10-15GB (20GB at worst) with actual compression, and that’s what I expect repacks to do (repack of Lightning Returns for instance went down to half the size compared to the official Steam release).

I could say the same shit about FFIX PC port that requires x10 the HDD space compared to the PSX version (2.6GB total with the 4 CDs). Again the repack of the PC port make it use almost 1/3 of the official requirement for HDD space.

  61. Nagato

If you had all of the ultimate weapons, and they were fully unlocked, then there are no better weapons in the game. Ultimate weapons were the only weapons that could break 9999 threshold. Their downfall was the no AP/TP/XP (I don’t remember as its been years since ive played it) which halted any character growth until it was fully unlocked.

Getting them usually wasn’t the hard part. Unlocking them was. They were next to worthless except for some final battles until they were fully unlocked.

Firstly, difference in size is only relevant to those with download limits and such, and compressed data is in fact a compromise, however small. And I’m pretty sure you haven’t seen high-res uncompressed textures or heard lossless audio ever if your senses can’t tell the difference. It varies by game, but a difference in quality is definitely present.

Secondly, please… you can do better than that. I was expecting a more aggressive response. Would it help if I called you a thieving c*nt like I did before? Or should I just rip your arguments open systematically so you can learn something for a change?

    1. Do I need to prove to you that uncompressed data (textures, audio etc.) is better than compressed data? Didn’t really feel the need to prove something so basic, but I still can if you want me to. If you’re specifically referring to lossless compression, not all data can be compressed in a lossless format.

    2. Piracy having upsides… sure. If you consider getting shit for free without paying, that is. Which is how thieving c*nts are made.

Again search for “lossless compression” which lists several kind of files that allow that, audio and picture alike. Compression of a file doesnt always mean decrease of quality.

Also if you had any argument, you would have done already instead of horsing around. The truth is that you’re just mad there is actually a better alternative for the consumer. The fact it’s free is just another convenience, whereas there are barely any reasons to buy a product if you get punished anyway by terrible business practices despite acting like a legal customer (localizations, DLCs, bloated install data, online digital distributions, DRM protection, broken and/or unfinished releases, and pretty soon paid mods too).

    1. Do I need to prove to you that uncompressed data (textures, audio etc.) is better than compressed data?

Someone doesn’t remember RAGE. The game that would never load properly because the engine could not handle the uncompressed files. Not only do uncompressed files take up more space, they also take longer to load depending on the media it is on and how much RAM the system has. Audio, ok, you can stream that, but stuff like textures? Texture streaming has never gone well with big, uncompressed textures.

    2. Piracy having upsides… sure. If you consider getting shit for free without paying, that is. Which is how thieving c*nts are made.

Oh yeah, it sure feels great to be disappointed by a $60 game that ends up being 3 hours of “”story”” with no replay value whatsoever!

“The game that would never load properly because the engine could not handle the “uncompressed files.”

    — RAGE, like most AAA games, never had uncompressed files, even for the 4K and 8K texture variations. Because an entirely uncompressed software build of RAGE would take up 1TB of space. Please check your facts.

“Not only do uncompressed files take up more space, they also take longer to load depending on the media it is on and how much RAM the system has.”

    — Doesn’t sound like you’re quite right there. Uncompressed files take LESS time to load because the files don’t need to be extracted during gameplay. They can be directly loaded onto the video memory and be ready for use, provided you have adequate video memory to begin with. If you don’t, the textures are cached from the disk instead, leading to slowdowns.

“Audio, ok, you can stream that, but stuff like textures? Texture streaming has never gone well with big, uncompressed textures.”

    — I never brought up texture streaming. Texture streaming has problems to begin with. Even for compressed textures.

“Oh yeah, it sure feels great to be disappointed by a $60 game that ends up being 3 hours of “”story”” with no replay value whatsoever!”

    — When you mention that you are disappointed by a 60$ game, it implies you actually PAID 60$ to begin with. Piracy doesn’t involve any payment at all; I thought that would be obvious.

  81. CoolingGibbon
    CoolingGibbon
    May 12, 2016 at 2:00 pm

“Again search for “lossless compression” which lists several kind of files that allow that, audio and picture alike. Compression of a file doesnt always mean decrease of quality.”

    — Again I don’t think you understand how compression in games works. Nobody takes a bunch of pictures and audio tracks and puts them in a zip file and calls them “compressed”. Textures and audio in games are distributed in proprietary formats usually, and not all such formats provide lossless compression. Even so, most system files and libraries cannot be compressed further because they are platform-specific binaries, which don’t handle ompression well.

“Also if you had any argument, you would have done already instead of
horsing around. The truth is that you’re just mad there is actually a
    better alternative for the consumer.”

    — The truth is you’re just boring me.

” The fact it’s free is just another convenience”

    — Theft is also a “convenience”. At the expense of someone else.

“If the market wasnt so terrible for legal buyers, I would certainly not resort to piracy that much.”

    — If you don’t like how terrible it is, you can simply choose not to buy the games and stop at that. The fact that you resort to piracy only proves that you’re a desperate twat with no moral fortitude who wants to play the game anyway but isn’t willing to pay for it, citing bullshit reasons such as corporate business ethics or something else in order to justify theft.

    That’s still an unnecessary amount.

Heard it’s locked in 30fps and audio language is locked to region too.

“No Encounters” mode? There something in FFX you can add to your weapons and an accessory in FFX-2 that gives you no encounters. Why is this a thing?

No, they were fully unlocked, and yes you can make better. So here’s how it works: each weapon has a certain amount of “effect” slots on it; the unlocked ultimate weapons all had the “break damage limit” effect, but they varied in what other effects they had, and most were not ideal. Close to ideal- pretty good- but not perfect. So what you could do was get these blank high end generic weapons and load them up with the effects you wanted (ofc break damage limit was pretty mandatory); each effect required a specific item, and most of the really good items were only available in the higher levels of the monster farm. At least thats what I recall- it has been about 15 years since I’ve played the game. You could also do this with armor- there was a “break hp limit” effect that would let you get characters up to 99,999hp if you had the spheres for it.

Basically, unlocking the ultimate weapons is the START of FFX’s postgame content, and definitely not the end.

That wasn’t actually that bad, as I recall. If memory serves, getting Wakka’s ultimate unlock was the worst- I was playing blitzball FOR-EV-UH. My team was ridiculous, btw. I mean, there wasn’t even a contest after a certain point, I probably could have played and won with just Tidus and a goalie or just Brother and a goalie.

Eh, the international version of FF12 made me appreciate how incredibly amazing a high speed toggle could be- I can’t even play that game without it.

    >want to play old games on PC and older systems (like PC-98)
    >cant buy them because they’re either too expensive or simply near impossible to find
Piracy helps to archive those games and be available for everyone
Not to mention systems like the Playstation systems became better thanks to CFW/modding and just putting everything in a memory stick/HDD

    >wanting a product worth your money, and not wanting to get fucked by anti-consumer practices, isnt having a sense of integrity

But please continue with the “muh theft” faggotery.
