Final Fantasy VII remake director says third game won’t compromise graphics despite being multiplatform

Square Enix has stated the third Final Fantasy VII Remake game won’t compromise on its graphics, despite the shift to be fully multi-platform at launch.

While actual details on the third remake game are nearly nonexistent, we now know it will be multiplatform unlike the first two games, which were long-exclusive to PlayStation systems.

“Both the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox versions have been incredibly well received and generated a lot of buzz online, and that attention has also made me realize how many people are worried about this issue,” director Naoki Hamaguchi said in an interview with Automaton. “However, our decision to go multiplatform with the FFVII Remake series will not in any way lower the quality of the third installment. Our development structure simply doesn’t work that way to begin with. I suppose I’ll just have to keep saying it (laughs).”

Elsewhere in the interview Hamaguchi confirmed the third Final Fantasy VII Remake game is being made with PC as the lead development platform, a drastic shift from previous entries which prioritized PlayStation. The director even went so far as to say PS5 and even its “Pro” upgrade are considered “mid-range platforms” internally. This has apparently led to some concerns on maintaining performance parity on all platforms.

“The main concern is that if development assumes hardware of a certain level as the standard, all platforms might be pulled to that level of quality,” Hamaguchi said. “What I’d like to clarify first is that the highest-end gaming environment is PC.

“While PC gaming is gradually expanding in Japan, overseas growth has been even more rapid. The market has broadened tremendously across both consoles and PC. The FFVII Remake series has sold very well on platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store, so we develop assets with the broad PC market in mind. In fact, our 3D assets are created at the highest quality level based on PC as the foundation.”

The original Final Fantasy VII Remake launched for PS4 back in 2020 and took nearly six years to come to Xbox and Switch 2. The second remake game, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, launched in 2024 for PS5 and is coming a lot sooner to Xbox and Switch.

As mentioned, details on the third and final Final Fantasy VII remake game are under wraps though Hamaguchi said they’re right on schedule. Furthermore, he noted the team porting the game to platforms is entirely separate from the team actually making the third game.

“Development of the third installment is progressing very smoothly, and we’re almost exactly on schedule with the milestones we set at the beginning of the project,” Hamaguchi said.

Hamaguchi teased that the third remake game is “already in a playable state” and the team is currently in the final phase, building up the game’s content and experience.

“We’re at the stage where the quality improves day by day, and each time we play it, the scenery feels different, so it’s genuinely exciting,” he said. “I think it won’t be too long before we’re able to share some kind of update with everyone.”
