Square Enix is releasing a free app for mobile devices, called Final Fantasy Portal, that will keep fans up to date with the newest information about the franchise. Its “Topic Corner” will feature game walkthroughs, interviews with Final Fantasy developers, and polls.
More importantly, Final Fantasy VIII‘s Triple Triad mini-game will be included with it.
This Triple Triad is a little different than the one featured in FFVIII, however. It has new art assets, and its cards span various FF games. Barrett from Final Fantasy VII, Seifer and Rinoa from Final Fantasy VIII, Princess Garnet from Final Fantasy IX, and Vaan and Balthier from Final Fantasy XII are all confirmed for the mobile version of the game. The cards in the mini-game can also be shared with Final Fantasy XIV.
The mobile Triple Triad will be free-to-play and support Bluetooth battles.
Registering with your Square Enix ID and playing the mini-game will earn you points, which you can trade in for digital goodies like Final Fantasy wallpapers.
No release date for the app has been announced yet.
Those of you who read our salute to 20 years of PlayStation will know what I think about Triple Triad. I’m not sure how I feel about this iteration of it. If it’s free-to-play, does that mean we’ll have to pay for the cards? That would be disappointing. But: card battles with human opponents! I hope for the best, and expect … I don’t know what to expect.
