Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi says he’s not retiring and working on new game

Now that Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi reunited with Square Enix in publishing Fantasian Neo Dimension, the veteran has officially stopped his retirement plans – news confirmed with an unannounced game he’s working on.

While the Final Fantasy creator previously teased his unannounced, new project on Twitter/X before, this is the first time he’s confirmed the project in an official capacity. Sakaguchi also confirmed the game with the pledge that he isn’t retiring yet, despite Fantasian being hyped up as his swan song.

“I made FANTASIAN thinking it might really be a retirement piece, but yes, I am withdrawing my retirement (laughs),” Sakaguchi said to Famitsu. “We are starting to make progress on a new work, which means we are working on a new game.”

In the same interview Sakaguchi teased up his new and unannounced game, though he naturally can’t reveal much yet.

“It will be made by almost the same team that worked on FANTASIAN, but I can’t tell you what we are working on yet,” Sakaguchi said. “One thing I can say is that game production is fun. It may be more of a pleasure than a job.”

Fantasian Neo Dimension is Sakaguchi’s current project, a new console port for their Apple-exclusive fantasy RPG, described as an “enhanced version” of the game.

Whatever the unannounced game from Sakaguchi turns out to be sounds like it will be an intimate look at his life and family, as he’s expecting to be a grandpop soon.

“It may be that I am getting older, but I really feel that friends are really nice. I am excited to be able to develop games with everyone again. On a personal note, I am expecting a grandchild soon. I hope to incorporate what I feel at that time into the new game.”

Fantasian Neo Dimension is launching for Windows PC (via Steam), Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PS5 sometime this holiday.
