Sirlin Games have launched a massive update to their fighting game Fantasy Strike, which includes switching to a free-to-play business model.
Fantasy Strike originally launched in July 2019 for $29.99. This new free-to-play version allows players to use any character, and includes free access to online Casual and Ranked modes, Practice mode, and single matches vs the AI.
There are a number of ways to upgrade your experience, starting with the Core Pack for $19.99 USD. The Core Pack effectively unlocks all the game modes, including Boss Rush, Arcade, Survival, local versus, and the ability to directly challenge friends online.
The $99.99 USD Collector’s Pack includes all the content from the Core Pack, as well as unique skins, the “Party Time” KO effect, a year of Fantasy+, and 13,500 gems. Other aspects of the new free-to-play business model include a cash shop powered by gems and the aforementioned Fantasy+; a monthly subscription service that comes with special perks.
Gems are bought with real money, and can be used to buy the game’s large array of new cosmetic items that were added as part of the update. Fantasy+, which is also paid for with gems, gives players access to a replay feature, master costumes, double XP, and a green nametag in-game.
Finally, the update introduces two new fighters, Chancellor Quince and General Onimaru. You can find a full rundown of the update here, and the trailer for the update below.

If You’re New To Fighting Games
Designed to work great on keyboard, no need for a special controller. We’ve streamlined the genre to get you to the fun decision-making part as soon as possible. All moves are just a single button press, combos are easy, move lists are concise. We’ve cut the chaff to focus on the heart of the genre so we can show you why fighting games are awesome.
If You’re a Veteran
This game is designed by an ex-Street Fighter dev and hardcore player for play in tournaments. Mixups, rushdown, zoning, and the grapplers seeming too powerful on day 1. It’s got all that. And you can play it with pretty much anyone in the fighting game community, no matter what other fighting game they play, because you can all reach basic competency in Fantasy Strike in minutes and start playing for real. Plus you can play with a joystick, gamepad, Guitar Hero controller, or whatever else you want.
Fantasy Strike is available on Windows PC, Linux, Mac (all via Steam), Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4.
