Nintendo has already sent a cease & desist to the developers, the game is no longer available. The developers reported that half a million gamers played the game in their browser prior to it being taken down.

Despite the Japanese 30th anniversary for the original The Legend of Zelda already passing in February of this year, some fans have taken it upon themselves to create a voxel-based version of the classic to celebrate its thirtieth birthday.

Dubbed the Zelda 30 Year Tribute, fans can now play the 3D, voxel-based version of the game right from your own web browser. One of the biggest differences in this adaptation is the screen-scrolling being absent, so fans of the original may be thrown off.

The developers are known as Scott and Mike, who built this adaptation in WebGL. It’s worth noting that there are things missing from this, but overall it’s a fun little way to waste time at work, or school.

It remains to be seen how long this will remain available until the Nintendo lawyers slap the creators with a cease and desist. You could also pick up Silicon Studio’s excellent homage/parody to the game, 3D Dot Game Heroes.

The 30th anniversary for The Legend of Zelda in North America won’t happen until August 22nd of next year, with the European release a bit after on November 15th of 1987.
