Fans Are Modding Super Smash Bros. 4 to Function Like Melee

Super Smash Bros. Melee remains a mainstay for ultra hardcore players in the Smash Bros. community for a variety of reasons, and some of those fans love the game so much they’ve been modding the latest game in the series, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, to be just like Melee.

The new project is titled Super Smash Bros. Melee HD, and its now in a playable beta form. The current version includes staple Melee mechanics like crouch cancelling, L-cancelling, wavedashing, and the same physics as the 16 year old game. Featured above, you can view a new trailer showing off the current build.

It’s also worth mentioning the mod reverts all of the characters’ movesets back to the original ones seen in Melee, while new characters not seen in Melee will have new movesets. To get your hands on the mod, you’ll need to join the modding groups Discord channel.

A similar attempt at re-creating Melee happened back with the previous game in the series, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Fans supported the mod until its final 3.6 update.

Took them long enough. I was starting to think that maybe Smash Bros 4 was the real successor.

The melee fans don’t stop. Why don’t they stop. Make them stop.

    Melee is never not over!
Now someone put that Kirby water fountain stage on this so we can start the fights.

At this point why not just play Melee?

Melee fans remind me of that one Pokemon fan everyone knows that’s never played a game since Yellow and won’t stop screeching about how Gen 1 is the best.

They’ll still throw a fit that it’s not “pure”, even if Melee got an HD rerelease.

I don’t get the hate. They’re an underserved part of the Smash community, so they got around to making their own HD Melee. Seems legit, really.

Gen wunner here, and I still love all the other games in the series mostly because of the gameplay. I will admit though its annoying when I see a Pokemon from a later gen that looks cool like Tyrantrum or Aurorus, and the more purist types mock it just for being in gen 6.

Used copies are hard to find locally, and they’re going up in price on Ebay.

Plus Nintendo would never put it on Eshop because they most likely wanted the newest Smash to sell. Sakurai himself admitted he cares more about attracting casuals instead of Melee fans.

While people are free to do what they want I still think it’s weird to mod in features from a game that is over a decade old. Playing old games makes sense but for example modding in systems from final fantasy 6 or 7 in final fantasy 15 just sounds weird. To each his own I guess.

Why not just emulate it then? Going out of the way to heavily mod a new entry just to play like the old one is dumb when you can still play the old one easily. Talk about a waste of time. Even more considering this is a Nintendo game, and Nintendo games ALWAYS get DMCA. So it’s even more dumb and a bigger waste of time if we are honest.

Hate usually comes from some of their attitudes (flipping between “woe-is-me” and “my fighting game is superior”) and individual autism (one competitor tried to run the other over in a parking lot, and no one pressed charges).
Some people are passionate, some are autists.

    I have to agree.

All dissenters have to do is exactly that: disagree. Disagree, and go about their own business afterward. It’s not like a Melee fan can keep them from doing whatever it is that they’d rather do than play something like Melee.

Instead, they take said fans’ criticisms and actions (including and especially the modding) as a personal affront. Melee fans may be seen as unable to let go of the past (I don’t blame them–I loved Melee, and Brawl fell FAR short; I lost faith in the series after Sakurai made his casual-focused MO public), but at least it’s largely harmless (if not totally so).

The excessively sensitive behavior of dissenters says more about the the dissenters themselves than anyone else..

Well people still take Pokemon games from Gen 5 and up and make remakes of Gen 1 with them so… why not?

I’m gonna start the countdown until these people get a DMCA complaint so they can make a completly new game with uninspiring character designs that are carbon copies of the characters featured in Melee

No kidding. It reminds me of those colossal faggots who shit on Blizzard for finally deciding to create Vanilla WoW servers.

It feels almost like they shill for the company at that point, eager to suck the cock of their new creations and not want to be reminded that a large portion of people actually prefer something older that the company has created (likely when it was different). It strikes me as insecure and almost drone-ish.

What if those systems from over a decade ago make some sense in a modern title? FF6/7 and FF15 seem pretty incompatible but Smash Bros (or most fighting game series) not so much.

I’m much happier with the option for mods to breathe new life into a game, explore ideas or fix it than having to jump between five installments (3DS included) just to appreciate a nuisance especially if it was patched out.

To be fair, a lot of fighting game fans have high expectations on the subject of being “arcade perfect”. They listed a ton of things wrong with Third Strike Online Edition

It is very hard to please that crowd especially when the game was built around a controller which doesn’t have a proper successor to date.

(This being why I’m really concerned for a lot of GameCube and Wii U potential ports)

I don’t think being a purist in this context is too bad.

My personal answer is “I want more characters, more everything”.

Even if I say I loved 3rd Strike, that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t really appreciate a mod of Ultra SF4 to be more like it.

Or perhaps I want SF5 to have more supers (Arcade Edition won’t do this!) and all sorts of other gimmicky stuff – perhaps making NPCs playable.

We aren’t just limited to the initial game release and the patches which come afterwards.

Instead of exclusively begging Capcom or Nintendo to make things our way, we can and should act on chances to do it ourselves.

I should look into those, I imagine they would keep the Game Corner at the very least.

I really want to try this. After Project M I’ve zero reasons to return to Melee and Smash 4. Sure, this new Smash 4 mod looks unbalanced but whatever. I love fast paced and combo rewarding Smash than whatever the hell is Brawl/Sm4sh.

I also think mods are always a good thing but personally I was never that attached to meelee’s mechanics so that’s probably why I don’t really get why they feel like importing it to the current one.

Brawl had really glaring problems so I can understand project M but smash 4 was fine. Still, good for them, I guess

appears so decrepit seeing melee kids continue to waste their lives by never being able to move on from one 15 year old game.

The Final Fantasy comparison is kind of weird since 6 and 7 are a different genre to 15, whereas Melee and 4U are different variations of the same game play formula.

I agree with this, as well.

The weak(minded) tend to react that way when their understanding of reality is challenged. In these cases, a creative business entity gives them that sense; ardent support of what rejects the actions and productions of said entities (not to mention outright rejection of them) amounts to such a challenge.

Their only recourse, seemingly, is aggressive reaction in defense. Certainly a hallmark of insecurity, if you ask me.
