Developed by the incredibly talented Tango Gameworks, Ghostwire: Tokyo is a first-person shooter with a magical twist. Set in Japan’s biggest metropolis, Ghostwire is a modern mythical tale where a possessed man must save his sister’s soul with the help of a mysterious stranger.

Ghostwire: Tokyo mixes traditional yokai and Japanese urban legends masterfully, creating a unique aesthetic that is rooted in traditional mysticism while also representing more modern fears through its enemy designs, making for a timeless experience.

Featuring a solid amount of traversal and combat skills, as well as a dense open-world map, Ghostwire shakes up the genre quite well, bringing unique ideas at a time when first-person shooters were finally beginning to experiment more. Check out our review for the game to know more.

Laika: Aged Through Blood

Describing itself as a “motorvania,” Laika: Aged Through Blood is a fresh take on the 2D platformer genre, having players control Laika, the vengeful coyote who roams a post-apocalyptic world inhabited solely by animals.

Laika is a challenging game that rewards precision and quick thinking, as the player is constantly performing stunts while making use of bullet time to take on enemies, never stopping for a second.

Laika: Aged Through Blood is one of the more unique titles on this list, not only because of its gameplay being so reminiscent of those BMX Flash games that were so popular in the 2000s, but also because of its heavy story with many emotional moments, making it a great title if you also enjoyed games like Katana Zero or Hotline Miami.
