Nintendo’s spinoff Mario games for the original Game Boy hold a special place in my heart, not only for their portability but also for how they shook up things established as mainstays for the series. Now, fans have added color to Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in an unofficial romhack.
The new rom hack release is titled appropriately Super Mario Land 2 DX, which for those of you unlucky kids that never got a Game Boy or a Game Boy Color, “DX” was the common subtitle for games ported to Game Boy Color in a new colorized version.
The creator behind the rom hack, Toruzz, notes that not only has the game been fully recolored (and not simply the Super Game Boy type thing), he added the ability to play as Luigi (with different physics, of course), and even removed the lag seen in the original game. You can find the rom hack here.
Originally released back in 1992, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins features series protagonist Mario looking to retake his castle, which has been stolen by Wario. The game’s sequel, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, was the first title to feature Wario as the protagonist. All three games will forever be burned into my skull and memories.
