Falcom has announced a new Dragon Slayer game to celebrate the series’ 45th anniversary.
While details like a genre and release platforms weren’t confirmed, the game will release for consoles, and probably won’t release for a few years as the series’ 45th anniversary isn’t until 2029.
The original Dragon Slayer game was released way back in 1984 by Nihon Falcom for the PC-8801 home computer. It was a landmark title that helped pioneer role-playing games in the early Japanese games industry.
Here’s a blurb accompanying the announcement that recaps the series:
In 1984, Nihon Falcom released its first game, Dragon Slayer, for the PC-8801, billed as a “newtype real-type role-playing game.”
Dragon Slayer’s unique mechanics, including simple and easy-to-understand controls (ramming into adjacent enemy characters to attack), unique growth mechanics (returning experience points and items to their homes to strengthen the player), and puzzle elements (using specific items and magic to overcome obstacles), drew attention and earned it high praise from many PC gamers as a masterpiece of the early days of action RPGs.
Subsequent titles under the Dragon Slayer name included Xanadu (Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II), Romancia (Dragon Slayer Jr.), Legacy of the Wizard (Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family in Japan), and Sorcerian (the fifth Dragon Slayer game).
The sixth game in the series, Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes, adopted a command-based combat system and emphasized a diverse cast of characters with richly detailed settings and story development. This work sparked the creation of the Legend of Heroes series, which subsequently continued its legacy with the Trails series of story-based RPGs, including The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky.
