Wube Software has announced Factorio is getting its final big content update as its team moves onto new game projects.
The game’s upcoming 2.1 update will be its final major update, though it only brings some quality of life improvements, “some small features”, fixes and polish, and improvements to modding. The update will not have new planets, new enemies, or new tech components.
“We envision 2.1 as our last major update of Factorio, and we will shift the focus onto long term support,” the developer said in a new update. “So things like bug fixes, platform support/compatibility, modding features, etc. Other than that we feel we’ve reached a good place to conclude the active gameplay development.”
Factorio was originally released to the public via an alpha build as early as 2012, its team officially formed into Wube Software in 2014, and the game launched in early access via Steam in 2016. It later hit full release in 2020 and got ports for Switch and Switch 2 most recently.
So what’s next for the team? Details are scant, though it sounds like Wube Software is actively prototyping what their next game(s) will be.
“We have been starting work on projects other than Factorio,” the team said. “Honestly there will not be anything to share for a long time, but you might notice some of our team members less active fixing bugs and working on Factorio as they spend their time on other game prototypes/experiments.”
Factorio has been wildly successful and has over a hundred thousand positive reviews on Steam alone. We interviewed its founder / creator Michal “Kovarex” Kovarik before – check that out here!
To help bolster their development on these new game projects, Wube Software is scaling up. Most recently they “hired a few new humans to help with development of Factorio and the new projects.”
Factorio has been available for Windows PC (via Steam, GOG, the Humble Store, and direct download), Switch, and Switch 2.
