Facebook debates reinstating Donald Trump’s account

A new report is claiming social media giant Facebook is considering reinstating former US president Donald Trump.

The report (via CNN, Breitbart) notes Facebook executive Nick Clegg is reportedly overseeing the decision-making for Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The decision will reportedly be made in the next few weeks, but not in time for the January 6th anniversary – nearly two years after Trump was banned off Facebook – and Meta platforms. His ban was originally indefinite, but was later modified to last two years, or January 7th, 2023.

Facebook, like many other companies, organizations, and pundits claimed Trump created a “risk to public safety” after the January 6th Capitol riot, a claim that Clegg made in June 2021 when they initially said they’d consider allowing him back.

The decision on allowing Trump back onto the platform is being handled by Clegg and a newly formed internal team at the company, all of which come from different parts of the company.

It’s worth reiterating that the decision to reinstate Trump on the platform will reportedly not come for a few weeks, so we’ll likely not hear about it until next month or later.

Going by Clegg’s previous statements, the Facebook team will “determine that there is still a serious risk to public safety,” and if so, will extend the ban on Trump’s account “until that risk has receded.”

Twitter has since reinstated Donald Trump’s account, but only after Elon Musk became its sole owner and held a public poll to decide the matter.

Trump hasn’t used his account since, and it remains to seen if he’ll use his Facebook account if he got it back too – as he launched his own social media platform, Truth social, where he now regularly posts.
