It’s often said that the games from our childhood, the great titles of our 8 and 16-bit past, are horribly racist and sexist. While that’s an issue that can be debated, it seems that one clever rom hacker has decided to add one more -ist word to the list of themes our favorite games are guilty of propagating: Communist.
Developed by KP9000, this hack for the NES classic Super Mario Bros 3 turns our favorite Italian plumber into a communist defender who sets out to annihilate capitalism and bring glory to mother Russia.
The changes to the game reflect its new tone, such as the letters from the princess being replaced with quotes from Lenin, Bowser is now replaced with Uncle Sam, slot machine games have been removed, and the collecting of coins is now actively discouraged.
The amusing part about all of this is that given the fact that many of gaming’s new detractors claim they are being oppressed by capitalism, this may in fact be seen as a welcomed change and a long-overdue cleanup of a disgustingly jingoistic and needlessly patriotic Nintendo game.
