The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human is a Metroidvania action-adventure game made by YCJY, where you play as the navigator of Argo 9, a spaceship/submarine hybrid. Humanity has gone extinct, and you are plunged back into the depths of a derelict Earth. You must discover the reason why humanity has gone extinct, or die to one of the many monstrous sea creatures that thrives where we could not.
Much of the game’s story will be told via the surrounding environs, and not so much via actual narrative, somewhat akin to the Dark Souls series. However, most of the themes the game puts forward will be based on the threat of climate change, as well as existential questions of humanity’s impact on Earth.
In the spirit of Metroidvania games, exploration will be a key feature of the game. There will roughly 10 unlockable upgrades, which will open up the game world as you acquire them. Torpedoes, thrusters, and a chainsaw are just a few of the potential upgrades listed.
The game’s battles will exclusively be boss fights, in the vein of Shadow of the Colossus, and there are currently 9 unique bosses to kill. When said bosses are defeated, the player unlocks a log about the monster, and will be able to read more about them.
The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human is currently on Kickstarter, along with a playable demo, and was recently greenlit on Steam. The devs seem to be intent on giving the game a very low price, and letting it sell well on its merits alone. There is no release date yet, but will likely be one when/if the game is successfully funded.
