Expanded Triple Triad Launches on Mobile Devices in Japan

Last December we discovered that Final Fantasy VIII‘s Triple Triad mini-game would be packaged with Square Enix’s Japan-only Final Fantasy Portal app, which is available for Android and iOS mobile devices. You can watch a gameplay trailer for the game above.

Triple Triad (not to be confused with Tetra Master from Final Fantasy IX) first appeared as a collectible card game in FFVIII. This mobile Triple Triad will include characters and monsters from (at least) more (main) Final Fantasy games than just FFVIII, and players can play against AI or other people through Bluetooth. The player who wins gets to claim a card of their choice from the loser’s cards on the board.

This game is unlikely to make it West, at least not as part of the Portal app, which appears to be meant for Japan only. However, there’s not much stopping those who do want to play it from doing so. The game’s banner is easy to spot in the app.

Also included in the Portal app is Square Enix’s first Final Fantasy.
