The recent film Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time (shortened to Shin Evangelion) has made over 7.4 billion Japanese yen since its premiere last month.
According to Japanese news blog Game Watch, the recent film has broken the 7.4 billion yen mark and is possibly on track to break over 10 billion yen by the time it’s through in theaters. The news comes after the film broke 3.3 billion yen in its opening week, and 80 million on its opening day.
For context, according to Google, 7.4 billion Japanese yen comes out to over 67,600,000 USD.
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is the latest installment of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise after 2012’s Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
The latest film has been delayed twice due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and was originally intended to premiere in June 2020 before being pushed to January 2021. The film was once again delayed due to the State of Emergency that Japan was undergoing in January 2021 before finally premiering on March 8th.
An English premiere date for Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time has yet to be announced, though it’s worth noting that film distributor GKIDS currently holds the theatrical rights to the Evangelion franchise in North America.
