Fortnite returning to iOS devices teased by Epic Games CEO

In celebration of New Year’s, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney posted a tweet which seems to be hinting Fortnite’s return to iOS.

The game was taken off the platform nearly two and a half years ago due to guideline violations, sparking one of the biggest legal battles of the decade.

“Next year on iOS!”, Sweeney briefly said in a tweet. This was promptly followed up with an image of Fortnite, with fireworks showing off the year 2023.

Given what has transpired over the course of the past couple years, it would seem obvious that this is in regards to the game returning to iOS within the next year.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that the game will be returning to Apple’s app store in an official capacity, though, if recent reports are to be believed.

Recently, reports surfaced that Apple will be forced to add the functionality of sideloading apps on iOS 17 when it releases. This is reportedly in response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which is set to go into effect this year.

As a result, Epic Games could bypass their issues with Apple’s terms of service for the app store, and create a Fortnite version that could be unofficially installed in this manner.

While this is big news for anyone hoping to play the game on their iPhone, it doesn’t seem like it will be coming to Apple devices anytime soon. For now, one can play Fortnite on practically any other platform that isn’t iOS.
