Enjoy the Debut Gameplay for Hellblade

As promised, Ninja Theory has shared the first gameplay for Hellblade.

Featured above, you can view the gameplay for the upcoming PC and Playstation 4 action game. Players will experience a story following the Celtic Warrior Senua, who is left traumatized following a Viking invasion. The game itself is centered on her trip into Hell, which is actually a trip into her own psychosis.

Ninja Theory contracted the help of Paul Fletcher, a Psychiatrist and Professor of Health Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, alongside people who have actually experienced mental illness.

As for the funding of the new title, we now know it’s backed by Wellcome Trust, a charity that focuses on educating people regarding science and health. Trust’s Creative Partnerships Manager Iain Dodgeson talked up why they decided to fund the game, in an interview with IGN:

“Rather than being a didactic game teaching us about psychosis, Hellblade allows us to explore it through the creation of a compelling and complex character, and the world that she inhabits.”

A release date is still unconfirmed, but we’ll keep you guys posted.

“Gameplay” Demo. (unless the game’s going for a mobile-style gameplay)

Tackling mental illness, huh? Well let’s hope the writers are on point. Please don’t beat me over the head with your message.

I think the age of telling a story over presenting a game, see David Cage as well as these guys, needs to go away.

Then again, game which have a story that then ignore them for expedience of gameplay, see Mass Effect, need to be checked as well.

That “gameplay” trailer had all of 5 seconds of actual gameplay in it. With that in mind, it’s hard to say anything about the game. So, color me undecided.

Wasn’t really much of a gameplay trailer. It was acting more like a cinematic trailer, but with in-game footage trying to show how immersive it is. Although the idea of having a game explore someone’s mental illness is kind of interesting, it can go horribly wrong and end up being an eye-rolling experience for the player.

So first, much of this was shown in that last video they put about the development of the game. Second, she is insane, so probably it means that the “magic” in the game is just her brain short-circuiting. Third, we could not see how she fights. Why developers are so eager to hide important information about their games? Are they afraid of someone copying?
And finally, it’s good to see is not exactly an exclusive, even if the game might not be fantastic.

I’m sure we will get an interesting look into mental illness, not bullshit tumblr level mental illness.

The camera is too zoomed in and there are too many damn cuts for me to discern any gameplay. Good job, Ninja Theory.

If that’s gameplay there is no way I’m playing this. I would get dizzy trying to do that, camera is way too zoomed and bounces around too much

[its a story of a rejected SJW looking for revenge with mental illness]

You can’t get disverstiy then this they keep drumming there not enough lead women in games now this with tomb raider, mirror edge, FF13 & sequels, remember me, & strange life, & beyond souls.

Are the SJWs would be happy about them & this game?

They’ll probably show more closer to release. They don’t even have a release date set. I’m definitely intrigued, but hope to see actual gameplay soon-ish.

I disagree. There are people who enjoy those types of games. Not everything has to appeal to everyone. The more diversity in game design the better. Some people are more mechanics focused and some care more about exploring a world and interacting with its story.

Ninja Theory was doing the Mad Max Furiosa look before it was hip.

Wait – was that look ever hip?

It’s Ninja Theory, though. I can’t think of any studio game journalists enjoy talking up more (Eurogamer writers in particular seem to be angling for a job there). NT’s writing is horrific when not outsourced, so the wagons will be circled when they inevitably fail to treat the subject of mental illness with an iota of respect.

I didn’t say it did. You just gave the impression that you think that genre should cease completely. My point was those types of games have a place.

Was talking about balance between storytelling and gameplay. Where Two Souls tells more of a story, a poorly done out of order one at that, Mass Effect gave up on story to be a third person shooter that was more about personality types and the relations between them.

How they want to depict the theme of mental illness is up to Ninja Theory, I don’t need the subject handled with kid gloves.

Somehow, even with them getting in contact with a psychiatrist, I expect this to be a pretty terrible example of psychosis.
Though, to be fair, personally dealing with it it’s safe to say that if they got it right it’d actually be an annoying and boring as fuck game.

Oh, kid gloves ain’t the concern. Basic competence is (just read what Alex Garland has to say about the in house writing at Ninja Theory). And they will almost certainly go full Tumblr and romanticise the subject.

Sorry, wasn’t sure what you meant by your first comment lol. Yeah, tumblrizing schizophrenia would be a bad idea (or any mental disorder). No one who actually suffers from one likes having it.
