Earthblade delayed again, “ain’t coming out in 2024”

Extremely OK Games, the folks behind Celeste and Towerfall, have delayed their next game Earthblade beyond this year.

While the game wasn’t techncially set for a 2024 release, the 2021-announced game was hopeful for a 2023 release back in 2022. That never happened but now we’re learning the game won’t release this year, either.

“This game ain’t coming out in 2024,” Extremely OK director Maddy Thorson said in a new blog post. Development on the pixelated adventure game is making progress and their team is “still excited to work on it,” but confirming a release date now “just isn’t in the cards.”

“We know that this will be disappointing for a lot of you and we’re sorry for that. Maybe this was predictable, but still it always sucks when the haters are right,” Thorson said.

To assist with getting more progress done, they’ve hired a new designer, Kyle Pulver, a “veteran indie developer” that also happens to be the world champion of TowerFall (and a hidden character in the game).

“Kyle quickly approached us with big ideas, which can be scary for everyone involved,” Thorson added. “But it was clear that he’s not here to derail the project. He’s identifying our vision and the problems preventing the game from living up to it, and working with us to pinpoint solutions. Plus his fresh eyes have inspired all of us to see things anew.”

Earthblade was originally described as a “2D explor-action game” set in a “seamless pixel art world.” It follows protagonist Névoa, an “enigmatic child of Fate” returning to a ruined Earth as she tries to gather tidbits of its history.

For now, you can wishlist Earthblade for Windows PC, over on its Steam page.
